Outpost 2 Language Translation
« on: May 02, 2005, 08:51:35 PM »
I'd like to work on new language versions for Outpost 2, like brizilan version etc :)

I no some people have french and german versions, so it will be easy to make them. But for others we will need help translating.

"Brazilian" is Portugese I believe. I may be wrong, but I think that it is correct.

Yes, Portuguese is the official language of Brazil.

coolzero: what we mean is that all game texts will be translated into the native language.

It's also possible that the 'officially released' versions of OP2 into different languages have the savant voices translated too. I highly doubt it though.

So yeah, for example, "Trade Center" might become "Centro de Cambiar" if it were translated into Spanish.

We believe we can get the translated OP2 versions for:

-- French (Français) -- neutrino has it, am I correct?

-- German (Deutsch) -- I think Cynex has it? and maybe others?

If you happen to have a translated version of OP2 for a different language, PLEASE let us know. We'd need a copy of the software to do a translated version.

Thanks. :)

If people can help us translate the Outpost 2 text, in game text, the campaign stories, mis objects etc we can do the work to put it into the game.

the result would be mixed language versions with english savant voices and unit names/menus in custom language.

Oh well, if people need it - ok. espcially the ones who don't speak english will profit from it. I support that.
a problem could be, when people talk about games on irc they don't know the english names of buildings and units.

I for myself would rather use a complete english version (that I currently have) or a German version (which I have either, but as some people might remember it isn't compatible with the english version).

we would make it compatible.

I agree with the unit names etc, and that wouldnt be changed, a Lynx is a Lynx :)

The result would be english savant sounds. And i think english game text, like 'worker ready', as that is part of the game.

The game menus text, in game and menus, campaign text we can change.

Names that are specific to the game, like "Worker", "Lynx" can't really be changed. However the text around them could be changed.

For example, "Worker ready" for spanish, changes to "Worker listo"

TH300 has brought up a good point, that way the names are standardized (and if someone talks with someone who doesn't know much english they can discern some things like "Supernova Lynx" they will know what they are talking about).

We would have full compatibility. (What we would do, is take the current english version of the game and patch it to load all its strings from an external DLL. The DLL would contain the localized versions of the text strings. (Either that, or the DLL could load strings from a INI file or something, that way anyone with notepad or a similar text editor could translate the entire game)

Hmm, one possible problem I have just thought of however.
OP2 lacks Unicode/multi-byte string support. (The unicode support for non WinNT/2k/XP is lacking in the OS itself as well). This means Far East languages like Chinese and Japanese couldn't be used in the game. (I don't think it's a major concern at the moment, but it might need to be considered)
Adding Unicode string support to support Far East character sets would require extensive modifications to the whole game, and would take a long time.
I don't think this is much of a concern though, is it?

Okay, i can see where this is going..

I think i better start on some kind of lang-file for Renegades, so it can be translated. I'll post on the renegades forum when the time comes for some translation. If anyone wants to help out with it, just let me know by then

For the good of everyone on this forum we shall speak in english.

Ben sur le forum on va parler en anglais car c'est la langue de la majorité. Mais ne t'y trompe pas. Au Québec on parle français.. et ça ne va pas changer. Moi je vis en français tous les jours et avec tout le monde que je croise. Et je vis à Montréal pareil, ville la plus anglicisée et multi-ethnique.

La situation n'est pas si pire que tu sembles le croire, du moins pour le moment.
