The State Of The Game

I understand that it is idled because of lack of support and technical difficulties, but I was wondering if the game would ever start up again.   Community support may have come back by now.

One way to advance might be to release the source code to the community so everyone can edit it.  All you would have to do is round up support and assign goals.  People could submit code and the core programmers may be able to stitch it together.

All I'm saying is, this is the project that showed the most promise and it seems like a shame that it would just stop.

Not sure if any of the project members are still lurking the forums, but I'm sure that the source wouldn't be hard to get a hold of. I have it laying around somewhere, but I'm not sure it's mine to give... Try asking an admin, or one of the genesis members.

(If I recall correctly, there's not an incredibly large amount there..)

It's on the shelf due to the team having life catch up with them.  Really all that's left is me.

As for releasing the code, I discussed this with Stormy, and we're going to basically give what we have to whoever asks.  Send me an email at jsisk377@gmail.com and I'll reply with what we have attached.

And GP, there's enough there that I'll have to do it in multiple emails (most of it is models though)

Oh alright. I was figuring since the source is available via svn, it would've been easier to distribute, but I guess that's fine.

Tramis: I know that there's *some* there, but it's not close to a full game ^^; I meant it relatively haha

If your shareing it, then share it for everyone. Upload it somewhere or get Galactic to create a ftp account on his server (he hosts the site) so that you can upload it all to the website for all. Thanks :)

That would work too.

Regarding the source code. I most likely still have a copy of the repository, or at least its state as it was when I was a 'developer'. Would you mind if I released it, if you intend to make it publicly accessible?

Well from what you can see with the recent activity Genesis is still going on. So I doubt any on is going to be getting any code unless there helping whom ever make it.

Get in contact with me and I can open the version control to allow anonymous checkout. (That way anyone could get a copy of the code).

It means if you ask him nicely he'll let anyone download any Genesis stuff from OPU.

Yeah, it was directed at the Genesis team (who are the people who created the code so it would be only right to ask them first).

Sorry for any confusion.

As far as the meaning, their code (and many other programming projects) is stored in a central repository that keeps track of changes to the code by different programmers. Right now it is restricted so that only the Genesis team may use it. If they give me the go ahead, I can set it up so that anyone can check out (download) their own copy of the code, but would need to be on a special access list to commit (make changes in the repository) any new code.

I've been out of the loop for a freakishly, long time.
Has someone uploaded the source yet? :P I have a lot of stuff sitting here on my hard drive, that might be of use... but considering the work on the models is patchy (worked here and there, so some of them are probably unfinished).

Meh :)

But yes, if anyone wants to use the source (code or models/art), feel free to get in touch with any of us and we'll hook ya up :)

I'm also open to giving suggestions, but being out of the loop for so long there's only so much that I can do  :heh:

That's the entire development directory for the OP3 project that I have on my computer. Stormy may have a few extra models/graphics/snippets of code that never made it into my version as I walked away from it before the rest of the team did.

Suffice it to say that this project was a failure. The code is pretty bad as well and I doubt anybody can make any real use of it. What can I say... we never sat down to design the code (mistake #1).

I don't know how long that download link will last so if the mods/admins here want to keep it around I suggest sticking a copy on these servers somewhere.

If anyone ever feels like totally reviving and restarting this, I've got some moderate programming experience and am headed off to college for game design (I can make time. :P)

No, you cannot make time while in college, unless you don't have to care about a scholarship and money to pay the housing, or are cheating.

Why would you want to resurrect Genesis?  Just start from scratch.

Hidiot: Try me.
Sirbomber: What I mean is start from scratch, I.E. revive the project from square one.

It never hurts to have people busy in the community doing things. we have 2 projects for a new game, plus Sirbomber is making a campeign for the old. We have some good code readily available, and I was, a while ago, even thinking, "Why not use it, even if its old code". And I have no clue how hard university really is :P
