I think buoys used to have bells attached to them, or maybe still do. If the man is trying to reach a buoy and subsequently dies (drowning from exhaustion before reaching, likely), he was already in the water and was hoping to reach it in order to survive (surviving is a good thing).

So, was the man trying to reach a buoy that had a bell, in order to hold onto it for dear life?

When you said no to boats, do you mean no to all kinds of boats, rafts, and the like?

Removed the first paragraph since there was no question. If it was meant to be one please rephrase.

He was not trying to reach a bouy.

All types if you like, no boat, raft, driftwood etc. was involved.

did he make it to the bell?
did the bell fall down on his head?
did that kill him? (if the above is yes of course)

I would second Speaker's questions, but there'd be no point. He was apparently visually impaired afterall. I suppose if you're blind or near blind, the only way to find land would be by sound.

ok, the guy drowned trying to reach the bell, while he thought he could still make it, judging from the sound/distance (since he's blind).

since this is a yes/no riddle, it will take several questions to figure this out, so why not answer directly: what's the time between the 2 bell sounds?

was he already exhausted when he first heard the bell?

i think we have pretty much figured it out now...

He thought the bell was on land, but was blind so he couldn't tell. He tried to swim towards it, hoping to make it to land, but was really swimming out to sea (towards a buoy), and drowned.

Is that correct?
Is there more to the riddle that needs to be figured out?

Hooman got the entire part. The man went swimming in the ocean, and heard a bell which he thought was on shore. Turns out it was a buoy so he got further and further from the shore, and died when he could no longer keep afloat.

I was just waiting for people to post entire scenarios of what they thought happened.

Eddy you do bring up an interesting point. Blind people usually have better other senses to compensate, and he should have been able to judge the distance to the bell much better.

Here's the thing, though:  even with better distance judgement, he very easily have thought he haad drifted further out.
