Outpost 2 Source Code
« on: June 08, 2005, 07:45:20 PM »
I know I'm new here, but after lokking around your site, playing the original and your version, and trying a bit of coding, I started wondering: "Hasn't anyone thought about asking Sierra for the source code?" It would make our lives much easier.

Now I know that there is the whole question of propery rights and such, but what profit does Sierra make on the game anymore? Its not like they would have much to lose from giving it to the community. I imagine it would be similar to the source code of Doom being released. And if they released it under a open source policy, there would be no worry out others making money off of it.

Perhaps its just a crazy idea, but whats the harm in asking. The worst that could happen is no for an answer. I propose that the community start a petition  for Sierra to release the source code for Outpost 2. Who agrees with me?

heh. sierra is dead and buried. It only exists as a name now. and we've tried asking before, but supposedly the source was destroyed. Its not likely to happen unforunatly......

Yes, I've talked to the lead programmer before actually, and he told me that Dynamix (the developers of the game, Sierra is the publisher and wouldn't have source), stored the source code in some sort of safe vault, with bank records, and presumably source for other games too. Well, when Dynamix closed its doors, the contents of that vault were apparently destroyed (since it was offsite and *someone* would have to keep paying to keep stuff there). And there's nothing Dan could have done, because technically the source code (even the code he wrote) was done at Dynamix and thus is company property. So technically he didn't even have the rights to the code he wrote.

So that's the long story behind it... unfortunately. :(

Well, a new coder is always welcomed, even if they are "just starting" to code.
As for the source code - no need to figure out all of it, just the important stuff necessary for creating new missions, and in that we succeeded, adding even more capabilities then the original version of the game had.

Feel free to roam around our coding section, download the SDK we've created, and start poking around with it.

Hello All

I myself ask Sierra for open source of Outpost1 & Outpost2, I also asked Interplay for open source of Star Trek New Worlds.
"Like talking to a brick walls"

I have many hours of playing Outpost, I'm more into the idea of working on a Outpost 3 project. I have many more new ideas and know how to program fair but trying to find the time to do it is the question :).

I do agree that open source would cause multi f*** versions of any open source game, BUT with a team forum like this would cause one version to standout beyond the rest. I also see the game engine being so old that must game programmers would be unhappy with its ability they drop there project, because of the engine was designed mainly for simuation only. I personally perfer simulations over other types, but I still play all types of games.
I wanted the source of them to understand what the orginal programmers had done, then make it better. Would you not want some of the features of OP1 & OP2 as next AKA OPU version.
I see all the work that has been done in this team forum, just in reading the forum the last two days. I can see about everything can be changed in OP2. This group has done great with the ability to change the missions and lab training to make OP2 like the next level anyway. I didn't see an artworks tool too edit graphics.

We can extract the graphics but i dont think edit them yet. Nice to know that you have read what we have done so far :)

For a new project i would like to create a OP2 clone so that we can improve OP2.

I also reviewed a few other old dead forums today, to gain insight.
