Windows 8 And Indeo Codec
« on: August 01, 2013, 11:26:53 PM »
Naturally, I like watching my in-game movies, because they're good, and I have almost all of them hosted on my Youtube channel, but I cannot for the life of me get the Indeo Codec to install under Windows 8 Pro 64-Bit. It just gives me a "file version skewed" error saying I have a newer one and to delete a file that doesn't exist.

Anyone else?

EDIT: Also hi guys.

There's your problem right there, not Indeo.

I'm still missing the point of the unending blind hate for Windows 8.

@Spikerocks: No, I'm not.
@Hidiot: Sorry, I am just very much used to everyone I know hating on Windows 8 without ever having used it because someone on the internet told them to. Personally, I love it.

Now are we able to steer this discussion back to seeing if there is a resolution to this problem or should I abandon this thread?

Well, honestly, I haven't had the time to upgrade to windows 8, but my friend has it, so I might try some stuff this weekend. If you can, can you just tell me what you did try, so I can skip those attempts.

...download installer, run installer. No dice.
Search for any answers online, no dice.
Run as admin/in compatibility mode, no dice.

Gave up and came here because I'm lazy, then proceeded to delve back into Civilization.

You tried pretty much everything my ISP tech support says.
ISP: Does it work?
Me: No.
ISP: Do you see lights on the modem?
Me: Only power light.
ISP: Have you tried unplugging it and re-plugging it in?
Me: Yes.
ISP: Well, there is nothing I can do for you then. This is probably a manufacturing error. Please wait 2 business years to receive a new modem.

it may be time to recode the videos and slipstream the code to play it into the executable (different dll?). the reason win 7/8 abandoned it was because the indeo codec is riddled with exploits. microsoft effectivly banned them

I had Indeo working fine under Windows 7 since... it was released.

Any video file that plays in WMP should work for OP2, actually, as long as the required codec is installed... but transcoding from one lossy codec to another is awful.

He meant as to why it wasn't included by default.

Worst desktop UI ever conceived. Not even the recent versions of Ubuntu are that bad. It gets even more annoying for multi-monitor users; in previous versions of Windows, if you have a fullscreen window on your main monitor, you can still bring up the task bar by clicking anywhere on the other monitors, but there is no task bar in Windows 8 and so this doesn't happen, which is a massive inconvenience. Plus, read any of the bazillion reports about Windows 8 not selling nearly as much as it was supposed to, OEMs having lackluster sales for Windows 8 PCs, etc. and the only conclusion that can be drawn about it is that it's the sequel to Windows ME. Add that to the XBone total PR clusterf*** and what looks to be a pretty fail leadership restructuring, Ballmer clearly has no idea what he's doing and will run MS into the ground. Who knows, maybe Bill Gates will come back to save his company.
