Outpost Universe XMPP Server Down
« on: September 12, 2012, 12:37:03 AM »
The XMPP Server is currently down. Blackbox and I are working on getting back up and running. I anticipate by tomorrow evening it will be back up. There are some issues with Java updates causing multiple errors in the software we use for the XMPP server.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

XMPP server is back up, as Highlander already figured out. The DNS may still need to propagate to some of you.

You may have to accept a new SSL certificate because I had to reissue it. In addition, if you are behind a proxy, you may have to directly connect to the server, using the hostname xmpp.outpost2.net.

By the way, I did some digging about the connection problems I had with this server. It appears OpenFire uses a broken Java libssl… Would it be possible to use a safer server? (like Prosody?) For all I know, it would solve some issues…

Note: I cannot connect to that server without subscribing to another XMPP server or requesting my system administrator to hack his XMPP server to ignore SSL errors, which I’d prefer not having to do.

I'm guessing I'm the only one who is still experiencing issues connecting to XMPP?

If you're connecting from work, that is entirely possible.

Nope, I still am, but I also stopped trying to connect on that server. :P

Interesting. Not attempting to connect to the server has to be one of the most revolutionary methods of getting on the chat system of all time.

The point is, either I stop trying, or the server’s libssl changes, so I guess I stop trying.

Well, to be honest, I didn’t fully stop trying. I created a new JID on the server outpost2.net, but that’s not an efficient solution. I already have plenty of JIDs, and the XMPP client I use (mcabber) can use only one at a time. So I’m using Jappix (a web client) to access the channel. And that really sucks.

IMHO, the XMPP server on outpost2.net should definitely be Prosody (we use that on upyum.com, and it works just fine for *everyone*).
