Another Hypothetical Question
« on: January 22, 2011, 02:26:15 AM »
Today, I was going through my collection of half-dead headphones from various cord accidents (getting rather frustrated) and I decided to look inton some wireless ones.  The prices are just rediculous, so I looked at some how-to guides, but they all are saying to get an FM transmitter ($30 - $70) and a 99 cent store radio (not to mention those old bulky headphones from the hay day of vinyl records).  Then I got to thinking: what about an old pair of walkie talkies?

When I was a small child, my sister and I had these big old brick walkies that were far from impressive, but they worked.  So I'm thinking I could find a cheap set at a thrift/second-hand store, take them apart, and salvage a good set of earbuds that just suffer from a single broken wire.

Anyone here knowledgable enough to give me a rough idea if this is feasable or not?

If sound quality is of no concern I suppose the walkie talkie idea would work (I will definitely mention though that if you find earbuds with a broken cord you may have a very hard time fixing them due to the way they make the cords.. they short internally inside the cable). Besides the fact that the walkie talkies themselves are going to have absolutely awful sound quality (because they are toys after all and sound quality is probably going to be on par with AM radio), it will also probably sound bad since the earbuds' impedance would not be well matched to the speaker's (assuming the walkie talkie doesn't have some kind of headphone output).

Honestly, if you are looking to listen to music or anything that actually would require good sound quality it might be worth your while to just pick up some Bluetooth headphones and a PC bluetooth adapter. A quick search on newegg turned up the following:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16875982253 - Motorola headphones, $34.99

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16833156069 - Trendnet USB bluetooth adapter, $12.99

If you are planning on using them with a laptop or a phone it's possible that these things might already have bluetooth capability. The big thing to look for is whether the devices support A2DP (bluetooth stereo).

Once you have everything here's a link to a guide regarding setting it up: http://www.lytebyte.com/2008/07/06/how-to-...set-with-vista/

heh, and that is why I ask rather than doing anything potentially disasterous
