You could take our version and just replace everything English with French (don't forget the Savant warning messages).

will cause checksum error on multiplayer.

the idea is to have all lang versions working with each other so it dosent matter what lang ur using u can still play multiplayer with anyone at opu.

I thought we could get around checksums?

So he could start changing it and then make it multiplayer compatible later.

As far as I can tell without going into technical realms that I have no knowledge of, computers use checksums to determine whether two programs are identical/behaving identically.

<speculation>

I infer that if you change the files the provide voices and language, your Outpost 2 will end up with a checksum different than that of the other player's Outpost 2 programs, indicating to the other player's computers that you are running an irregular version of OP2.
The other OP2s will then refuse to work with yours.
I imagine this is either: A) A precaution to prevent incompatible OP2 versions from trying to play with each other (which could result in a whole variety of errors), or B ) A precaution to prevent cheaters/hackers from giving themselves an advantage by altering their game.

Based on other people's comments, I gather there is some way around this, but I'm not versed in the ways of multiplayer, so I don't know what that method is.

</speculation>

My advice: Make a backup copy of your OP2 folder on your hard drive (simple copy/paste), and then make any changes you want. If it turns out you ruined something, you can always restore the backup.

Only certain files are checksummed. I don't think the voices are. There's nothing about the sound files that could really create any incompatibilities anyways.

Install the patched version from the site, and then copy files over to the newer patched version. If you copy Sheets.vol, then you'll get checksum errors, but the other vol files for voices and sounds should be safe to copy over. That should at least provide a voice translation.

I could be wrong though. I wouldn't be able to check for incompatibilities without having both versions to look at.

Was that a subtle hint to DrThrax that you want him to send you the French version?  ;)

I suppose I wouldn't mind a French version. Although, it may have also been a subtle hint to bug other people with both versions if my simple suggestion didn't work.  ;)

I sort of thought there was a French version posted a while back actually. At least I remember asking for a copy back then. Maybe it never got posted. At any rate I don't have a copy lying around anywhere that I can see.
