Cable Transport

I had a thought... pehaps we could use something like the ski lifts at ski resorts as a kind of vehicle transports for over cliffs and lava flows perhaps even across passes. It would use a 4 cables streched over the area with cable towers at every turn and certain intervals, the cables would hold a cart / cargo car that would hold either ore or vehicles for quick transport.

How would you get to the other side of the lava/cliff?

Yeah, you would need to first be able to get to the other side to build an endpoint.

The other thing is, these sort of systems aren't designed to hold lots of weight (the tanks probably weigh many tons).

And then there is a maintenance issue. The steel cables don't last forever and would need to be replaced every so often (I suppose this part could be left out of the game since maintenance would need to be done on everything, especially on a Venus like planet).

Also, why would a section of cable have a power requirement? the only thing that needs power is the station at the end (so it can drive the cable and so on).

First you have the problem with the fact lava isnt suppose to be crossed and should stay like op2.  Then there is the problem of the end point of the "bridge" said above in the other 2 posts.  Then there is the practcal reason A Ski lift style device made to move heavy things like tanks and trucks around would have to be monsterously huge on both ends and it would be incredibly slow  unless its going to be powered by a motor powered up by a Tokamak or two.

Cranes lift objects with one or two cables... Yhe power requirements on the cables could be dropped I suppose... The idea was to make it so that units wouldn't have to travel 20 KM to get around a cliff or lava flow.

Cranes lift objects they dont carry them horazontaly over a cable.  Besides the cable that would support that kinda weight would have to be huge to the point of inflexable.  Making it rather hard to use a Chair lift style system.

Its not practical
