Outpost-like Games
« on: December 13, 2010, 10:05:06 PM »
I'm really having fun revisiting outpost 2, but after completing both campaigns, I'm kinda hungry to see how the genre has evolved. Does anyone have some pointers to more recent games that are similar to outpost?

Oh and BTW, been playing the plymouth colony builder II map with disasters turned off, ( used this http://arklon.outpost2.net/other/DisasterlessMod.zip). I'm trying to lay waste to the Eden AI, but the awful blight spawns late-game regardless of using the DisasterlessMod.

Destroying the AI on this map has become something like an obsession for me these past days, but the blight spoils my fun each time  :'( . How can I keep the blight from spawning on this map?

BTW2: Any suggestions on where I can get skirmish-type maps for outpost 2? (AI, no disasters, domination victory)

thanks, and great to see that this game has an active community

cheers peeps
 :)

Hey! Welcome to the forums! Well, as for other maps, idk, but if you want skirmish, the IRC is the best bet (aka, online). There is no offline skirmish (thou, I find playing Eden Star ship on hard a skirmish type game).

There are various colony games past members built that could provide a skirmish-like game.
CK9 in outpost
Iamck in runescape (yes, I still play...sometimes...)
srentiln in minecraft (I like legos, and I like computer games...it was only a matter of time...) and youtube...

Hey, thanks man  :)

I'm afraid I'm too scared to go into outpost online multiplayer right now, (I'll be insta-annihilated), but maybe after some more practice  ;)

cheers

The Blight comes regardless of disasters, and I'm no coder so I can't turn it off. Pro-tip on taking out Eden: Move really, really fast. You should be able to take the bottom base out with less than 12 Micro's. If you can't, you were too slow. Or something like that. Good luck. I know it was a b**** when I waited until end-game and amassed a huge army to pummel the base.

The trick is to build up a base in the south-east corner as soon as you can and attack from there.  You'll have a 3 bar common (unless I'm wrong) and can just brute-force your way in.

as for the player made ones...I think they're in the file forum section, but I'm not sure...I'm not even sure if the files are still working, heh

Anyway, I totally forgot to answer your original question but I'm far too lazy to Edit my post.

I don't feel there is any game on a similar scale to Outpost 2. The major players of the RTS world (StarCraft, C&C, Civilization) are far different, with Civ probably being one of the closest you'll find. I can't vouch much for indie RTS games, but honestly after the huge flop Outpost 1/2 were in the eyes of critics, I can't imagine a similar formula being sought-after by anyone who'd get much media/critic/consumer attention for developing such a thing.

Unless it was pulled off in such a strikingly similar but radically different way. You won't see "OP2" clones, that's for sure.

Actually, if you watched the Sim City 2000 bonus videos, it says that Will Right based some of the game off Outpost 1.

Civilization isn't an RTS. :P

I find Outpost 2 is like mixing the base development restrictions of C&C with the base development restrictions of Warcraft II. I don't find it all that similar to Civilization. I'd think SimCity might have been a better comparison for the non C&C/WarCraft2 characteristics.

But yeah, I don't expect to see a commercial sequel.

Yeah, Civ isn't an RTS, but I was tired! Cut me slack!

I compared it because you have to manage an army, resources, and people, to an extent. Whereas C&C or StarCraft is resources, gunz.

Not entirely true.  I remember the Civ2 multiplayer edition had a secret option that allowed all human players to take their turns simultaneously.

I believe that in recent civ games simultaneous turns are a non-secret feature. But they're still turn based.

Anyways, there is the "Earth" series which I consider similar to op2. These games have a similar scenario (escape from the planet you're on and collect resources in order to achieve that) and "tanks" are also modular, i.e. you can combine any chassis with (almost) any weapon. But clearly, the civil part is lacking.

One classic game that is a bit similar to outpost is alien legacy. It spans an entire solar system, but like outpost its all about juggling resources and research, I highly reccomend it. You can download it for free from a bunch of abandonware sites.
