Thievery And Other Acts Of Illegality
« on: November 23, 2005, 09:51:15 PM »
Alright, a priceless painting, an ancient Greek statue, a bowl of fruit, and a pen are stolen from a museum (total worth is estimated to be over 50 million dollars and 50 cents since I said so). The cameras didn't record anything and the alarm system malfunctioned, but a witness saw somebody fleeing the scene around 9:23 PM. There are no fingerprints and no other evidence except for black ink splotches in various parts of the museum and a construction helmet. The helmet is very old and doesn't have any fingerprints on it. The police find six suspects. Who robbed the museum?
The thief is:
Tall (>5'7"?)
Short dark hair.
Male

Suspect #1
Height: 6'3"
Occupation: Construction worker
Worked in the area of the museum frequently.
Worked on museum repairs a year ago.
Seen around museum at 9:23 AM.

Suspect #2
Height: 5'9"
Occupation: Librarian
Used to be a museum tour guide, fired 3 months ago.
Desperately needs money.
Knows the museum layout by heart.
Seen around museum at 5:21 PM.

Suspect #3
Height: 5'7"
Occupation: Security Guard
Works in building across street from museum.
Used to work for museum, quit.
Knows flaws (blind spots, etc) in security system.
Seen around museum at 9:00 PM

Suspect #4
Height: 6'9"
Occupation: Programmer
Programmed museum's security system.
Needs more money for new project.
Seen near the museum at 9:20 PM.

Suspect #5
Height: 5'4"
Occupation: Cobbler
Shop is near the museum.
Needs to pay off debts quickly.
Seen near the museum at 8:30 PM.

Suspect #6
Height: 5'11"
Occupation: Businessman
Needs money to save his business from bankruptcy.
Ex-manager of the museum.
Seen at the museum around 8:45 PM.

Unable to reach a conclusion, the suspects are released. Somebody notices the same ink splotch that was in the museum on the sidewalk in front of the police station. Who robbed the museum?

And if this is horribly easy, well, sorry. It's very late and, well, if it was h ard to make, it should be hard to solve.

Ink is still wet? I'm guessing that has something to do with it? Well, ever tried to change an ink cartridge? I'm tempted to say the programmer did it. (Due to the absence of a butler to pin this on.)

Remember:
A pen was stolen.
The ink marks were all identical. (more or less)
The ink marks had to have been made by something.

Ok, I'm gonna guess the business man then. The other's don't seem like they'd carry around a pen. (Except maybe the librarian, but nah).

What kind of pen was it?  Inkwell?  Fountain?

Oh my. Is this puzzle supposed to have provided all needed information, or are we expected to ask for more info to solve it. I guess that could make for more interactive thread. Hmm, perhaps an idea for a future puzzle.

No, it should all be there. If it isn't blame human limitations (aka sleep).
Let's say the pen is... fountain sounds nice. What's the difference?
And if the ink marks were all identical, they'd have to have been made by something. And unless somebody went around with a rubber stamp and put it all over the place, it was made by somebody's shoe. And it's some kind of logo, but nobody recognizes it as a major show company.
I've just about given it away here...

I haven't the faintest idea how that was supposed to be figured out.

And I've been watching Law and Order for the past 2 weeks. So I should be like a professional investigator by now...

By the way, Law and Order fans, it's on TNT (Turner Network Television) all day until about 11 EST probably.

  Ok, I don't get it. Maybe you need to explain this a little more.

Err, btw, what exactly is a cobbler? I suspect I could be wrong on this term.
