Irc Server Migration
« on: September 25, 2010, 03:07:14 PM »
Good afternoon everyone,

We are moving our IRC server and related services to a new machine. This message is just to let everyone know that the migration is complete and currently an IRC server and Services are running on the new machine.

This migration is for various reasons; the old IRC server machine is technically not ours (we have permission to use it but it is used for several other purposes in addition to IRC and a couple other OPU services) and as such we don't want to continue running an IRC server on it (this permission could get revoked at any time). The new machine is completely ours and IRC is the only thing running on it.

The average user should see almost no difference; the new server has been linked to the old one so that no one should experience any connection issues or inability to talk to others on IRC during the DNS switchover phase. You may notice variations in pings; this is because the new server is located physically in a different location.

If you are having connection issues, please make sure that you don't have an entry in your hosts file for the IRC server (I know this was an issue some time ago as we had screwed up DNS entries on our end). Failing that, let us know here and we will try to investigate.

The old IRC server will be shut down completely in a few days from now (to allow time for DNS changes to propagate through the entire internet first).

Update: the old IRC server has been permanently shut down. If you are having connection issues, please double check that you never added an entry in your hosts file for the IRC server from long ago (if you don't know what this means, you probably didn't).

If you are still having connection issues please let us know.
