Changing Resolution
« on: March 06, 2010, 06:54:41 PM »
Hi all

Can the Outpost 2 resolution be changed without altering the desktop resolution?

I have a lot of icons on my desktop and would rather not scramble them. I am usually used to the old 640x480 resolution when playing Outpost. I like being able to see more with the new resolution but I find that the text on the side is too small and also having to go right down to the bottom to do commands, like build a structure or select a new research topic can get annoying. I can see that 640x480 to 1280x800 (my desktop resolution) is a big jump and that is why it is so zoomed out. Something along the lines of 800x600 would be good as it's not to far in or out.

Anyway, help will be appreciated.

Dunno if this would work, but,... try running DosBox and playing Outpost 2 in DosBox. As Outpost 2 was designed to work with both Dos and Windows, it should work. I suggest using Dosbox because, I believe with the window you can set the resolution to something that you like!

OP2 was designed for only Windows 95.  It was OP1 that "worked" on DOS.

Umm..., ahh, almost misunderstood the question. The version on Outpost 2 from the site runs in windowed mode, so it makes no attempt to change the resolution. Hence it will run at whatever the resolution your desktop is set to.

This does of course mean you can resize the window, making those buttons not so far away, but it won't do much to help readability. Maybe play with the font size or DPI settings under Windows? Mind you, that's still a global effect. (Right-click on desktop -> Properties: Play with the Font Size on the Appearances Tab, or go to the Settings Tab -> Advanced -> General Tab -> DPI).

I can't really think of any suggestions that are Outpost 2 specific. Mind you, if small fonts are frequently an issue, knowing about those 2 options can be nice.

I might be mistaken here, but playing with a lower resolution also makes the "main" window of OP2 (Where you see structures and vehicles moving etc) show a smaller area of the map ? i.e structures and vehicles will be larger, thus showing a smaller area total.. ?

At least that is how I remember it..

Anyways, my suggestion is that you actually get used to the larger resolution (If the above is correct), because then you get a better overview of situations on the map. Quite invaluable if you are playing against someone else or are fighting the AI.

Actually on my windows 95 I could play it on either windows or dos. Course at the time I thought it was a DOS only game so I never bothered trying it on windows until windows 98 was released.

I play on a 1920x1080 resolution so some of the text is a bit of a stretch to see for me too.

Just learn the hotkeys! I am pretty sure every button in the game has a hotkey for it. Just hover over the button and check the highlighted letter - that's the hotkey. :)
