Newbie Guide
« on: January 02, 2009, 04:32:40 PM »
After reading lots of ridiculous topics and posts scattered on every corner of this forum, I thought of posting a Newbie guide.

Starting with definitions, mainly:

-Outpost 2 is not Starcraft.
-Outpost 2 is not Total Annihilation.
-Outpost 2 is not Command and Conquer (Kane?? I don't know any Kane...).
-Outpost 2 is not SimCity.

-Outpost 2 is old (1997), and Outpost 1 is older (1994).
-Outpost series are unique. It's a mix of colony management and (in Outpost 2) combat.
-Outpost series are 'hard-science' games. This means that it depicts only available or possible technologies.

Some informal forum guidelines:

-Do not double post, except if there are no responses in a long time.
-Do not post on old threads. Instead, create a new one and link to the older.
-Everyone is welcome to post new ideas, but keep in mind the "not" definitions. Outpost doesn't need super-weapons, magic, futuristic technology, alternate colonies (with few exceptions. See Outpost 2: Renegades).
-Failing to comply with these guidelines may turn you into a target for other fans.

We need you:
-Got programming, modelling or writing skills? Consider joining one of the active projects.
-Want to start a new project? No problem! Some of the veterans will happily lend some resources (I think...) like webhosting and help you in any way they can. Just make sure you have something to show, not everything is free you know.
-If you're not interested in any of the above, why not creating a novella? There is a subforum dedicated just for novella writers.

FAQ:
Q: Isn't Outpost and Outpost 2 copyrighted? Is this site illegal?
A: Not at all! Outpost series were produced by Dynamix, which doesn't exists any more, and published by Sierra before it was bought by Valve. Sierra doesn't recognize Outpost 1 or Outpost 2 as their copyrighted products This makes Outpost series effectively abandonware.

Q: Can I download the complete game free of charge?
A: Of course! Both Outpost 1 version 1.5 and Outpost 2 version 1.3.4r2 can be downloaded without any kind of payment of registration. While you're waiting the download to finish, why not join the forum or drop by the IRC?

This is still under construction (obviously!) but I'd like some feedback. I'd like this to be as complete as possible  :D.
(Damn, I'm like a walking dead. going to bed now...)

addfile: There is no tactic like "Have to hold off until 'I WIN' get's ready"
addfile: This game requires some brains, senselessly rushing into someone's base is not recommended

Wrong.  Abandonware does not make something legal to download for free.

Also, Sierra was bought by Vivendi Universal (VU), not Valve.

Somehow I get the feeling that someone doesn't acknowledge attack marks...

I'd like to remark that posting in old topics isn't really that bad anymore. I'd actually prefer if someone posted in an old thread of mine instead of starting a new one with the same topic.

However, do use common sense, the 'use by' date is not the same for all topics :P
