New Terra: War Of Attrition
« on: March 07, 2008, 12:45:47 PM »
its a what-if scenario: What if Plymouth split from Eden, Doctor Ngyuen and his staff were assassinated by an extreme faction in Plymouth. This halts the terra-forming indefintely and the blight is never unleashed. Instead it touches off a political arms race as fingers point every which way...

fast forward 15 years...

Eden and Plymouth have spread across New Terra establishing bases and cities. Since the Nguyen incident, most terra-forming initiatives have been shot down by the Eden council but relations with plymouth have evolved into a cold war. Then, a major Plymouth city is attacked and most if it is destroyed by the time reinforcements arrive. Plymouth blames Eden, Eden proclaims innocence.

Then an Eden city is attacked in the same fashion and Eden points to Plymouth. This is the last straw for both sides and military elements are mobilized. The opening strike is an EMP missile barrage on one of Eden's agricultural centers, the dip in food shipments results in a small town on the other end of New Terra starving to death because of the disruption.

Eden responds by smashing a large Plymouth power complex near the top of the planet hampering manufacturing and shorting out one half of Plymouth's power grid. A small city loses life support and the entire population is asphyxiated save for a few who made it to the DIRT shelters and got emergency oxygen masks.

and the war is just beginning....

it was just a musing i had over making a more global scope of outpost, where you can actually have a full base w/ defenses and stuff waiting for you at the mission start instead of the threadbare necessities in the campaign

nobody here seemed to take to it (you're the first) so i abandoned it

lol, unfortunately, our maps are greatly restricted in dimensions.  If we could make a full-size world map instead of our current restrictions, I'd say let's get some people together and see what we can do.

srentiln in minecraft (I like legos, and I like computer games...it was only a matter of time...) and youtube...

i was thinking you could use the ' Axen's Home' as a global map and each mission takes place on a certain area where Eden and Plymouth are NPC controlled but your slice of either side (depending on mission) is under your control

Actually, what he's suggesting sounds rather easy.  The biggest obstacle would be the AI, as implementing 2 or more AIs across an entire world map would be... difficult, to say the least.  While having 12 missions that all take place on the same large map sounds cool, in practice it will not work.  The idea would still work perfectly if divided into various smaller maps, as the "global colonies" thing sounds like little more than eye-candy to me.

i mean, make u control both teams, plymouth and eden sounds impossible well, we have 2 teams that the game checks, EDEN or PLYMOUTH so... to make that maybe a third "colony"..,.

Who said anything about controlling both colonies at the same time? Did I miss something?

No one said, as the magic "either" was in the right place when the idea was presented  :P

The sheer number of buildings and researches this game has makes making an adaptable AI a very, very laborious task.

And even making a hard-coded AI that does the same thing every time is laborious, again due to the large number of buildings.

The AI has to build: labs, agridomes, residences, DIRTs,a GORF, med centers, recreational facilites in addition to the standard must-haves of a base: CC(s), SF(s), Smelters, power plants,VF(s). And then maybe some defensive guardposts too. When the maps get bigger, the AI might even hold two colonies on one map only.
