I want to look into .bin files.  All games have .bin files and I want to look into some of them, mainly to seeif there are any FMV's in them.

Well, in that case I guess but programs will use the letters "BIN" to mean "binary file", same with DAT, they use it all over as a "generic" extension.

Personally I think it's way overused.

Is a .bin file likely to have FMV sequences in it?

don't know... Probably if it is big....

Sometimes though the data will be embedded in other files, (for example, in Starcraft the FMV sequences are hidden in the install file, which basically contains EVERYTHING...... that's why its ~600 mb)

Yeah, but it's an efficient way to store stuff. (What it really is is an installer EXE stub + a game archive (MPQ aka MoPaq)

That can get pretty hard be cause there is a quite a few files inside the disk in Alot of different file extintions.  So its like hunting for the needle in a hey stack.

I mean though, the PS has standard APIs for accessing from some sort of packages.... (like Windows has for accessing files)

So when I am referring to "PS File" that means, any file that is readable by the PS filesystem.... sort of like the Virtual File Systems employed by most newer games... (examples:

PAK, WAD - Half Life / Quake
VOL - Outpost2
MPQ, SCM, SCX, ... - Starcraft, Warcraft3, Diablo2+, most newer Blizzard games
WAR - Warcraft 1 and 2
MIX, MMX, MMP, ... - Westwood / Command & Conquer (newer versions, Tiberian sun, RA, and up)
DRS - Age of Empires 1 and 2
... you get the point)

they treat each of these files as a sort of "Hard drive in a file". I imagine it's the same way for the PS/PS2/Xbox/Gamecube/ etc.
