I always die, without getting attacked.

In Eden - Starship, First I build a Lab.
Then I research Nursery while building another Agridome.
Then I research Medical Centre while building a Nursury.
Then I research University while building a Med Centre.
Then I build a University.

But I never get any workers, and slowly my scientists and workers die and I lose.

What am I doing wrong?

try to build some residences  ;)

the people will be happy and work more, die less and create more childs  ;)

Make sure their morale is not terrible. If it gets to terrible, new workers barely get trained and they all die too fast. Not having enough residences and not having almost every worker/scientist working can be very bad in the first parts of the mission. Once you get every other thing that increases their morale, unoccupied workers/scientists will not affect you too bad... But if it gets to high, they will force your morale to terrible again and then they all die, and you have to do something to stop them from dieing, or you end up back where you started or even worse (given enough time)

You're going to need more than one Medical Center. Try to keep the demand below 50% (though personally, I try to keep it below 20%, effectively making my colonists never die). Keep the Residence demand below 100% (Advanced Residences help) and don't get Leisure Studies. You only need one Nursery and one University. Any more is just a waste of metal, power, and colonists. Also make sure you have enough Agridomes to produce surplus food or morale goes down. If you're desperate, get Consumerism, build a Consumer Goods Factory, and just keep pumping out Wares.

Soon after posting this thread I tried building some residences, and HEY! I don't lose any more.

Now I can enjoy the game.


Actually I have another problem.

In Colony games (Starship) the enemy sends one soldier. If I leave the laser/microwave lynx, then it eats away at my base. If I get any defences and kill it, the enemy sends a huge army and wipes me out.

I don't want to fight, but I either die from the one guy, or die from the huge army afterwards.

And i don't have time to build up any defense.

Do I just suck, or is something I am doing provoking the enemy?

The enemy will attack at the same times with the same size armys based on the difficulty setting.

I managed to hold off small armies of tigers with 64 laser lynxes ^_^

Once you research weapons, the computer often becomes more aggresive. You can always build a bunch of scouts and self destruct on the enemy. That way you can take out the lynx without having to research weapons. I think they will still eventually attack with a larger army though, at least on the higher difficulty settings.

Also, you need an active university to get new workers.

Suckiness is harder to fix.

Alrighty then....   Suppose I might as well add my two cents...   At the start, what I prefer to do:   I immediately go for the three-bar mine north of the colony.   This mine gets destroyed by the volcano, but so long as you preserve the cargo trucks, its worth getting.   Immediately bulldoze a path to it, and be careful!  Don't let your trucks get caught in the lava path!   Do NOT let your metals pile up, build an extra smelter or two, if necessary (After the next part). Then,
I get a residence kit built immediately.   Once thats done, I start the standard lab and load the residence into the convec and build it.   I keep building them until the lab is done (I build a max of 4, and idle the ones I don't need later on.)   When lab is done and built, I promptly get a Nursery and University up first.   THEN medical centers.   Two medical centers is enough, just keep one idled.   So long as you have your colony demand under 100%, you should be fine.   Bring the extra buildings back online as necessary.   Additionally, the extra buildings serve as a kind of "extra colonist dump".   The idea, is to keep your unemployed colonists busy.   Too many idle colonists hurts morale.   So always keep reserching, and put extra workers into training into becomeing scientists, or keep a few extra buildings around to pump them into.
DO NOT RESERCH : Leisure studies, Metals Reclaimnation.   These techs add more morale buildings to the mix.   Having them reserched while not building these buildings will hurt your morale!   Do NOT reserch these techs unless you are willing and have the resources to build and run their related buildings.   While the GORF is not technically a morale building, having it reserched does affect morale.   I think DIRTs might as well, not sure though.   Hooman can probobly varify that when he has time...
After the required morale buildings are up, get Metallurgy (for better mineral yield) and then Cybernetic Teleoperation, then get a Vehicle factory up.   Pop up two smelters no more then 3 squares from the mine to your South West.   Get a Robo-miner, and another cargo truck, and have them get mining.   Two trucks per smelter.   Once that is done, get an Advanced Lab built.   Space it at least 3 squares from your colony.   (If anything destroys it, its taking everything around it within that distance down with it.   To save your colony, build it AWAY!)   After thats done, start getting Laser reserched and then Mobile Weapons Platform in the advanced lab.   Start pumping out lasers.   Don't stop pumping them out.   Continue to grow your colony and reserch.   Get Rare ore Processing, and then Railguns and EMP, and start building these.
After you've got those, you may wish to start tubeing south.   There is usually a mine down there, it may be common or rare.   If its a 3 bar common, exploit it immediately.   Two smelters to it and you can run 2 vehicle factories pumping out tanks CONSTANTLY.   If its a rare mine, get it ASAP, and start pumping out Thor's Hammer and EMP lynx like mad.   Consider getting Acid Weaponry as well.   Its great for those pesky spiders and scorpions, and groups of Lynx.   Just whatch where its shooting, or you can damage your own units.   If the southern mine is Common, you have a 2nd option for rare.   Get Geothermal Power and Vulcanology (After Seismology) and reserch Megma Refining (its in the adv. lab) Then exploit the megma vent at the very direct south of your starting location.   You can't miss it, its the one that has the red blob of lava popping up and down from it.   Don't worry, it will never erupt.   Its mine will however, explode with as much damage as an Adv. Lab, so you'll want to space your smelters away and bulldoze a path to it.   After all that is done, you can go and get Tigers.   Once you've got the tech for it, you can start exclusively pumping out Thor and EMP tigers.
Then, you have to worry about EMP missiles from Plymouth, but these arn't too big of a deal.   Reserch Spaceport, then get Meteor-Whatch Observatory, and build the Observatory.   Get High-Energy Ray-Composite Projecter.   Build the Meteor defenses.   Place one beside the Observatory, and a few around the perimiter of your colony.   To roughly gauge its range, its about a full screen distance on 1024x768 resoultion screen.   Or roughly about 20 square radious.   (You can figure that out by looking at the bottom left corner and counting as you move your mouse from a central location)   Meteor defenses will take down most EMP missiles that threaten your colony.
I'm going to upload a completed version of Eden Starship 1.   You'll see what I mean and did.   Basically an example.
Note you do NOT need multiple nurseries or universities, I built extras becuase I can.   Also, the nurseries are off because I was letting the colony shrink...   Too many people.

ALSO NOTE:   DISABLED buildings hurt morale!  However, there is no penalty to IDLING them.   Always either reassign colonists to bring the building back online, or IDLE it.

In menus when starting a new game, I can't see which difficultly level is selected...

Ah.   Known bug.   There is a rather easy fix.   Just hit the alt key!   There's also an alternative perma fix.
Right click on your desktop, go to "Properties".   Click the "Appearance" tab, then click the "Effects" button in that window.   Find the checkbox for "Hide Underlined letters until I press the alt key".   Uncheck it.   Op2 menus should work properly from there on.

lol, this is the funny part of Outpost 2 - the differences between Easy, Medium, and Hard REALLY are pronounced. If you're a newbie, I'd REALLY suggest doing things on Easy first :(.

I only beat my first colony game on normal ever yesterday (Eden, Population), and honestly...at times, I was going OMGWTF.

Also, a tip of mine...GET MEDICAL CENTERS UP AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Also, Automated Diagnostic Examinations is a must.

I do best with med centers built later on... preferably build residences until you can hold your morale at excellent. Then it just comes naturally.

Plymouth pop on normal is a rather interesting thing... You will get attacked according to the number of military units you have. Moving far to the west can be a good idea, building around earthquake zones (around as in avoiding them by a little space). Do NOT dismantle you first base. Building a few mic and stickyfoam guard turrets will delay things. The time I played I had nasty bad luck of having a measly 1-bare rare ore mine in a zone with 2 earthquake epicenters. Lost my army a lot of times just because of them >_> But that made me notice the thing about attacking army being directly proportional with your army

The proportional army thing also happens in plym starship 2 (normal).

Eden pop is a more complex thing. Big attacking armies will attack after you get certain researches, whilst other, smaller armies attack periodically.

Eden starship... lotsa lasers until you get acid cloud panthers! Use the magma vent south of your base, it pays off. The southern common ore is needed after you establish a stable defense. They will attack the nearest target, so keep them focused on the north side. Build walls with some 3-square entrances, keeping a ~5-7squares difference between them. Quadruple walls or thicker are good :D

Building one type of building at a time (ex. 4 advanced residences then 5 agridomes,etc) and then idling those I don't need works well for me.
