No, both are weapons that can only fire in a straight line (for obvious reasons).  It wouldn't make any sense for them to fire over walls.

I understand that but the reason I made the post is because I was thinking of how an RPG goes over the wall despite being more of a projectile, and the railgun not (which is obviously)... though with the railgun would be cool to see if it would go through a wall due to its speed of its projectile and damage the wall in the process. OR, be able to go through the wall at 25% total damage (penetration through a solid object like in Call of Duty)

projectiles follow a parabolic curve.  The driving force behind the rpg can be adjusted to create a new parabola.

Ahh and that causes the RPG to fly over a wall.

Btw does it say anywhere how "high" the wall is in actuality?

So anywhere from 10ft tall (about the height of a tiger) to 50ft tall (for an advanced lab)

Rail gun propullsion can't be adjusted since it's an impact wepaon and not an explosive weapon.  The RPG "warhead" will go off with the same potential damage if you reduce the propullsion.  If you reduce the magnetic pull on a railgun, you decrease its damage potential.  Therefore, it is treadted as a line of sight weapon.

the rail gun is a solid projectile fired by means of induction. it works very much like a regular gun. there for it will and can follow a path over a wall. the angles would be alot different. and the RPG uses a wire optical guidance system i believe. meaning the missile has steering through adustable fins.

Ya but in most games the Railgun will go through solid objects... like a wall... or in the case of red faction it will destroy the wall.

Outpost 2 isn't most games :P

In reality, a railgun that would be small enough to mount on a land-based vehicle would not be likely to penetrate the thick walls built in OP2.  The ones that are in use are HUGE and need the size to be able to accelerate the projectile (unless the tech has changed a lot since I read something about how they work)

the largest thing i have seen fired from a rail gun is a car piston looking thing.

But i do not see this going through a wall of the op2 calibur that can survive several attacks from rpgs for each tile.

Its perfectly logical that a rail gun could fire over a wall. its not a straight line weapon it is effected by gravity and deceleration there for its curve would be extreme to that of a rpg but it would be possible for it to fire over a wall. but if i recall correctly thor hammer acid cloud emp can all fire over a wall and plymouth has rpg emp esg sticky. meaning plymouth has one more weapon that can go over a wall then eden. making the rail fire over the wall gives 4 each. or 3 each if you want to discount emp because they are shared.

Yes that BAE Systems test fire.

Mostly though, railguns are not practical to use right now (in reality). This is because the great amount of heat produced and the great amount of energy that is needed to power it. The heat produced is enough to melt the metal rails (believe made out of copper), making it an extremely expensive one-use weapon, more so than a cruise missile. Now I have heard that they have been able to design railguns now that are not 1-use weapons, but they don't fire the round as fast or as far as the rounds fired from the 1-use weapons.

I wonder if they could take a concept from a tokamak and apply it to the inner workings of a railgun (in that, the inner core of a tokamak is so hot that its amazing that it doesn't melt everything from within; though it might not work as the railgun uses a magnetic field to do the acceleration and the tokamak uses magnetic fields to induce a nuclear fusion reaction)... also the power required for it to be used is roughly the equivalent of a small nuclear fission reactor... you know the ones they put on ships and nuclear submarines... not very practical for a tank, but works fine for a ship.

------------------------------------------------------

Well.. that is unless the tank is of a landcruizer size of course, then it works... otherwise no.

I do not believe the same rules would apply to the rail guns rails and the wall of the tokamak
