Hmm, kind of makes you wonder if there are copyright issues though.

Yeah, like that's the biggest copyright infringement issue we have to worry about.

Edit: It's (supposedly) based off of the developer's daughter's handwriting, so... Can you copyright penmanship?

I don't think that "based off of" part has much relevance to the question. Your first point makes a bit more sense. Still though, I've come across other issues that don't seem to depend on the font....
