The 'purple waste' is a bacteria called 'Blight', it infects any unit that touches it. Vehicles are destroyed and buildings are permanently disabled. If you want to win, you'll need to complete these objectives before the Blight reaches your colony:

Easy:

Quote
Keep at least 20 children alive.
Keep at least 14 workers alive.
Keep at least 8 scientists alive.
Reconstruct Astronomy database.
Reconstruct Boptronics database.
Reconstruct Chemistry database.
Reconstruct Planetary Sciences database.
Reconstruct Social Sciences database.
Have 5 or more ConVecs.
Have 1 or more Earthworkers.
Have 1 or more Robo-Miners.
Have 1 or more Robo-Surveyors.
Have enough Evacuation Transports for your population.
Have 6000 units of Common Metals in Cargo Trucks.
Have 2000 units of food in Cargo Trucks.
Have an Agridome kit in storage.
Have a Command Center kit in storage.
Have a Smelter kit in storage.
Have a Structure Factory kit in storage.
Have a Tokamak kit in storage.

Medium:

Eden or Plymouth campaign?

On mission 2, the Blight only appears on Eden campaign  :P

Ummm, is it just me or are the objectives all exactly the same, except on hard it specifies that kits must be in convecs (5 kits = 5 convecs), and easy/medium specifies that you must have 5 convecs and also the 5 kits (not necessarily loaded). ???

I think in hard mode, you've less childs/workers/scientifists, less ore and less agridoms

and the mine is less rich...

objectives are the same, but in fact the conditions change  :)
attention! ne mets pas tes mains sur la porte: tu risques de te faire pincer très fort
warning! don't put your hand on the door: you risk to be grip very strong

Yes, depending on the difficulty, you'll have less ore, food, colonysts and morale

What difficulty level are you playing on?

The other thing I didn't know when I started playing was where the objectives are. It will actually tell you if you've met all of the objectives or not. Press Alt-O or click on the right most control button (looks like the Sierra mountain) and select "Mission Objectives"

If anything shows up red, you still haven't met that objective. When all the objectives are gone (or green depending on your settings) the mission will automatically end.
