actually it was more in medieval samurai time.... and they do that  for major honor failure or when they lost in combat.. sometimes they were doing it too when the daimio died in fidelity to their leader they basicly draw two cut into the stomatch and then are decapitated by the second ( a friend of them or an ennemie that acclaimed the courage of the fallen guy) honest i think this is crazy but enyway.

the stomach was cut by the tanto or the wakizachie.... and the head by the katana of the second
