debate tips
« on: November 28, 2004, 05:32:10 PM »
okay, these are just little tips, not to be taken as rules, lol.
  • Be prepared beforeand.  If you are going totake a side on an issue, at least know as much as possible.  Nothing is worse than going into a debate only to learn you don't know what you are talking about.
  • Remain respectful.  Even if you completelydisagree with the argument, it isn'tright to start bashining the person or the idea.
  • Allow your opponent to speak first.  This will allow you to know exactallywhatyou are up against before you even start to talk.
  • Always payattention to what the other side says.  It isn't who says the most, but who remembers what is said that makes the best argument.
  • Listen for phrases like, "I don't have to provemy side, you have to prove yours."  9 out of 10 times they are trying to buy time because they have no idea what they are going to say that could prove what they are arguing.
  • Outcome is not important.  As long as both sides made their points known in a good manner, everyone gains a bit of something.

actually, mezza, for most of the thanksgiving week I couldn't get online, so I used the time to think, and I realized that, most of the time, I had a set of guidelines I followed when I was debating.  I just thought I'd share them.

... I get that when I debate a far right conspiracy theorist.
