Title: Outpost 2 Cancer Research Team
Post by: xamlit on June 18, 2004, 07:19:52 PM
I've decided that since we have so many members it would be nice to start a Folding@home team.

Team #: 37855

Folding at home is a cancer research program that utilizes your spare computer power to mathematical calculations and simulations of folding proteins. Your computer is designed to run at full speed constantly. Bet ever realize how your computer works harder when playing a 3d game? Well thats full speed. You see, we we are browsing or chatting or doing idle things with our computers we are virtually using only abot 23% of our computing potential. What this program does is it utilizes your spare computing power and uses it to fold proteins. Now, a common misconception is that your computer will slow down if you use this application. Thats not true, its important to realize that it only uses your spare resources. Meaning that if your playing games  F@h literally does nothing. But if your playing solitare its using more of your processing power.
Its also very competitive it measures how much you have done and posts it. It is really fun to see who has folded more. It will also be a nice test to see who's computer is faster!

Have fun guys! Folding at home is a really good cause

Maybe I should build an evil contraption, consisting of hundreds of old processors.

Than, link all the processors together, after this is done, I will activate my uber-processor computer, and have 10 GHZ worth of computing power for any cause!

Sounds Great! But I will build an 10.1ghz machine LOL!

That is, it will be superior until I hook my 2.53 Ghz machine to it =^-^=

youve read the comic "zits" havent you lol

there is also another thing like that, it uses your spare prosser power, but it searches the signals from the Aerocibo raido tellescope for inttelagent life its called seti@home, although I think the cancer thing is more logical lol

It uses CPU-time to cool itself? That's a first!

Alas, I have already formed a (sub)team myself. See my sig! Although, admittedly, I haven't folded much lately (and neither have my fellow team members). Maybe I'll do a brief switch and donate a few spare CPU-cycles.....

it doesnt use cpu time to cool itself, my tweeked vesion of windows works with a series of relays that have been solderd in so that ALL spare electrical energy goes to the fan

Sooo......what you're saying is that if the CPU usage was to move to 100%, your PC would crash because all available power is being used for cooling?

some advice, get a better compute lol

I am also running this program now, 20% at the time of this post on my computer's first assignment, and it isn't slowing me down at all :D

no, im saying windws automatically opens or closes a series of relays depending on cpu usage, moniter color (some colors are more efficient), the power dedicated to the a:\ (wich i never use)

when the power that has been dedicated to these tasks isnt in use the relay closes (or opens, i forgot how i wired it) and sends the power to the fan

So, with all that in mind, what's the problem with folding on your PC? Considering it only uses spare CPU-cycles.

Monitor....colour? You reroute power from the monitor?

No, wait......

Relays? Rerouting power from other components? Tweaked version of Windows to handle all this? BUH? What on earth are you running there? And how on earth did you accomplish this "customisation" that I have never heard of?

Now you can add my nec-v20 (http://www.olympusmicro.com/micd/galleries/chips/necv20low.html) to our team. Just joking, i have a bad Amd athlon 2000+ 1.7 Ghz processor that working for you inded. My nec-v20 (http://www.olympusmicro.com/micd/galleries/chips/necv20low.html) is in my basement. Actually, I dont think that the 10 MHz the Nec-v20 gives will make any differnt.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!

I'm first:

Team members
Rank
(within team) User  Score  WU
1  Tobias_Pahlsson_'Saibot'  239.0  1
2  xamlit  127.0  5
3  Plymoth45  118.0  3
4  xfir  47.0  1

Suck on that!

Now I have start with a new: 300/5000; ZZZ!

And that on my bad Athlon XP 2000+ polomino @ 1663 mhz!

The faster you do one the more points you get. The guy that introduced me to this does the option to run two at once since he has...I think it's called Dual Pipeline or something like that. Anyways, I am also doing it and I will see if it will let me switch over to ya'll's team. Don't worry, I haven't eve completed one since I can't get it through my wifes head to leave the computer on at all times. She likes to throw it into standby all the time.

Still sitting on my first one. I could run two instances of Folding@Home and actually get it all done faster (P4 Hyperthreading!), but it increases the CPU temp to a level I'm not comfortable with.

Not really...

The bigger a WU is the more points you get. WU's come in different sizes. Meaning that yes you can get a 50 frame WU and finish faster, but only get a little bit of points. But if you have a huge one then you get alot of points.. You realize that the guy on top has only completed one WU. He probably had a huge Work Unit and it took him some time to do..

WTF? My first one was finally about to be done and now it is reset. It is back down to 13% complete....

I hate my computer. At the current moment my computer will freeze up if I try to do just about anything. It will automatically reboot just out of no where or it will freeze up at the most unopertune times. I need to just back up everything and then reload Windows on it. I will lose XP that way, but I think that it has to be done.

Levi's problem is this:
Code: [Select]
[22:34:19] Writing local files
[22:34:19] Completed 2325000 out of 2500000 steps  (93)
[22:42:39] + Working...
[22:56:57] + Paused
[22:56:58] Suspending work thread...
[23:46:03] CoreStatus = 1 (1)
[23:46:03] Client-core communications error: ERROR 0x1
[23:46:03] Deleting current work unit & continuing...

And I have no idea, how to avoid it. Levi got that error several times.

I will stay folding for team 37855. Unluckily I lost ~30 hours yesterday when my computer froze.
