Yeah, I know, the topic is ancient (https://forum.outpost2.net/index.php/topic,5734.0.html) (over three years old now) but I figured I'd reply.
I watched it. Finally. And honestly? I loved it. It wasn't what I expected it to be. It could have been trimmed down a bit as some scenes were too drawn out but it was a great story about humanity.

My sister has an audiobook of the martian movie, and she seems to like it a lot more than the actual movie. If you liked the movie, maybe take a look into it.
-
You know I still haven't seen this. I'd like to watch it though. I went looking at one point on Netflix and couldn't find it.
I don't watch a lot of movies anymore.
-
I don't either, most movies these days are overproduced shit shows masquerading around as art.

If you liked The Martian, you should also check out Intersellar. It is a bit older (2014), but it was also a very good "realistic" space-y movie. Definitely a lot more glum with it being about the extinction of the human race and all instead. Also, there is blight!
-
2014 is hardly 'older'. :D
For me pretty much anything from 2000+ is 'recent'. There are still some movies from the 90's that I still enjoy. Most movies from the 80's and earlier are just difficult to watch now (between shitty effects, shitty equipment and extremely dated styles... I dunno). Though Rocky Horror Picture Show will likely remain my all-time favorite classic film... speaking of... it's that time of year again!

I really enjoyed Interstellar. And yeah, it did have the blight. ;)

Interstellar's ending was a total shitshow, although I mostly enjoyed the rest of the movie. Supposedly Spielberg's original script had a totally different ending where centuries on Earth pass and everyone starved to death, which they probably threw out for being too grimdark, but that sounds better than what they replaced it with.
-
Yeah, the ending was a bit weird and a little too fantastical. Though I suppose I was kind of looking for a happy ending.
... Don't quote me on that ;)
