Well, they did not copywrite "Ultimate Outpost 3: The Final Chapter"

Post by: CK9 on January 21, 2004, 08:38:10 PM
Thus they cannot say anything about OP3

LOL, we're gonna ask for donations to support GCU Co. and if you make a donation of 10$(subject to change) or more you'll get the game as a FREE gift.

Like my one friend has a band but if your not signed with a recording studio or something, his dad said, you can't sell your album, so he gave me the idea of "donations"
Title: update responce
Post by: CK9 on January 21, 2004, 09:14:30 PM
That would be selling

Yea.. you can't say you give it away free for a donation. You have to say you get it free no matter if you give a donation or not.

just don't try anything you think could be considered selling, unless someone gives you guys something as their own idea

I've sold CD's before - obviously not mainstream but a couple of my friends made an "album" on audio tape - I converted it to CD and we sold them in places like schools etc.

If I recall we sold like 20 of them

Not a lot but it IS possible...
Title: update responce
Post by: CK9 on January 25, 2004, 03:56:20 PM
of course it's possible, but, depending on the copy write experation date, you could have gotten in serious trouble.

We still could ask donation. :) but you don't have to if you don't want to.

I dont think that selling a game that you created with you'r own hands is illegal. The game is yours so sell it. U didnt stel the game, u made it you'r self from scratch. All u need is remove any sierra code and put in ur own(If its possible) then make a profit.

Post by: Betaray on January 25, 2004, 06:28:50 PM
well the name is more of a problem than the workings of the game, but I doubt Sierra cares about it anyway, and if they do decide to be jerks, we could just say that they dropped all claims to op2 and thus have to right to interfeer with the selling of op3

Post by: CK9 on January 25, 2004, 09:52:26 PM
because it is entitled with Outpost and it is made to be a sequal, we have to worry about that.
Title: update responce
Post by: plymoth45 on January 26, 2004, 09:38:34 AM
well, our ransacing of sierra had better occur soon then, that way they wont have any proof that they are the makers of op1 and op2, that might help, if they even have the data on op2 still.

Post by: it2000us on January 26, 2004, 10:23:34 AM
Well, if the name is the only problem, cant you rename it.
Title: update responce
Post by: CK9 on January 26, 2004, 11:39:46 AM
We've already disscussed that, the majority think that the name should stay.

I do not believe the name "Outpost" is copyrighted or patented in anyway....

First of all, in the manual/box it makes no reference to the word "Outpost" as a trademark in any way... (Well, it can't be because there is Outpost.com which sells computer parts etc)

Delphion.com (patent/trademark/copyright research site) returns no results for "Outpost 2".

Unrenewed copyrights take 75 years from date of publication to wear off.

So it WOULD be illegal to sell ANY part of Outpost 2 (whether it's the artwork, or the core, or anything)

Are the names or ideas copyrighted?

You can't copyright ideas.

You HAVE problems ... In Czech Republic we simply don't have this problems. Freeware is completely out of that and copyrights in CR aren't so hard. We had sold about 300 games on CDs and about 30 music CDs of our own development, before we had turned on freeware and it wasn't matter !

Post by: Phantom on April 11, 2004, 02:55:04 PM
Haha. Yah, copyrighting stinks, there can be a lot of trouble if sierra still has ANYTHING op2 related copyrighted.

I guessed something, what is copyrighted is the main name no?
'well if you place the name in iverse order with the outpost name as secondary name it woldn't cause trouble.
I guessed that becouse of the tomb raider film, the actual name wasn't tomb raider but lara croft and tomb raider was a second name

On TTam's old NH site he went through all the people buying the OP name, I remember one was Stellarwave, but I don't know who finally ended up with it and closed it down.

YOu could get donations but making a project that would never have any progress and donate for the never moving project. :-p

Who says they won't have progress? Look, this is not your forum to stomp on people's ideas. I believe OP3 will work. It just has to get out in the open.

If you act like this toward people's projects again, consequences could result.

I think Runic Realms bought the rights or something. Anyway, they then cancelled it.

it was Stellarwave that orriginally had the idea... then RunicRealms bought out stellarwave for almost nothing mainly for their servers and equipment and promptly canceled the OP3 project... and then i bought the OP3 name off of them.  I also bought the copyrights to all the logos and fonts and every thing from Stellarwave... I am also in contact with the Ex-designer of OP3 (Stellarwave) and have offered to pay for him to continue the project... he said he would be in contact with his guys and team and get back to me.

I hope you don't mind that I answer your question even though you didn't specifically ask me...  MYST is a really original puzzle/adventure sort of game. It was made by Cyan, a company formed by two brothers.  I don't know what joke CK9 (what does that stand for, anyway?) was referring to, though.  Perhaps he was referring to the MYST development team; I honestly don't know.

actually, the joke isn't MYST related, it is just the personality that matters for getting the joke...as for what my screen stands for, I'd like to know that myself.  I'm sure it had some purpose at on time, but what it was I have no idea

and kiler, just ignore it.  If it is someone else trying to annoy you, then they will succeed if you let it bother you.

yup yup! :P  That's a single-frame shot from one of the Cinematics. I'm still trying to figure out which codec to compress it with.  (Full Frames Uncompressed came out to 728 MB when it was rendered. lol)  Now that I learned how to skin, I can now make better models. :)  Well, I'll probably start working on new scenes soon.  Then I can set up a small rendering farm at the GCU LAN.  (About 4 computers, lol)  Well, glad you liked it. :)

I'm going to be making alot of the models that I'll be needing for the movies soon.  (Also, now I can export to GameStudio format, so that saves alot of trouble.)  I'm either going to be making 3D People or maybe using actors or something...  (The first Item being my preference. but I have to find people models then.)
