Title: Outpost Online
Post by: Galactic on September 22, 2013, 07:28:06 PM
I have been working on a new project called Outpost Online for quite sometime now. I expect to be ready in the next two months for beta testing. It is a browser based game that is runs in real time. Well, I can't say that it exactly runs in real time, but updates every 30 minutes. The time interval may change based on how the beta tests work out.

The game is very similar to Outpost 2 with some changes to the way the game is played since a web browser has a few restrictions. Everything will be based on a grid system. The early beta games will be testing different game types, such as colony value, resources, population, or last man standing. Maybe we can even have a space race!

Alliances can be formed, armies can attack together, resources can be shared and other players can defend your base.

I may need a couple of volunteers to help me write the manual for the game and perform some data input. A couple of hurdles I still need to jump are the attack system, alliances and the queue controller for the updates at 30 minutes. Buildings, resources, maps, status screens, registration, and research have all been completed. I will be putting a website up soon for the game, but the OPU forum will be used for any communication on the topic.

I am sure everyone has a lot of questions about the game and I will reveal more details as we get closer to beta testing. Screenshots will soon come.

Make a big post when it's ready to play!

Realtime and updates every 30 minutes doesn't make sense to me.

Good luck, though.

well realtime to the sense of every thirty minutes you get an update.. So I assume your browser based op2 game will be somewhat similar to how tinywarz worked? every couple minutes the game updated? or would it be more like Utopia where its every 1 hour a day passes in the game?

Anyhow, I am just happy people are still interested in keeping outpost 2 alive in some ways.

Good luck!

I am not familiar with tinywarz, but I think you get the concept. So Outpost 2 keeps track of time using Marks. Every Mark in this game would be 30 minutes. It will not be a game that you have to be logged in all the time to play it. Depending on the flow of the game in beta testing the standard Mark time can be amended.

I think half a hour would be sufficient for your beta testing needs. I am sure eventually you might make it longer or shorter depending on how testing goes. Anyhow, I would be glad to be apart of the beta testing once you begin the tests.

Thanks. Now I'm getting an idea. Hopefully that concept works out.

Put a website up: http://www.outpost-online.com/

More of a placeholder than anything, but it is coming along!

Are you implementing combat units as well or is it primarily growing ?

EDIT: I'm thinking this sort of game could lend itself to some of the less played game modes of OP2, likes Midas/Resources Race and Space Race.
Timeframe per "game" would be good for 1 week to 1 month or so maybe ? (3 month long like Utopia might be too much)
Announce game start some time beforehand though, so that people can get signed in and start at the same time.

I played a lot of tribal wars, and the notable thing they did, is instead of "marks" it uses actual time. For example, instead of saying "this will be done is 2 marks" it goes "this will be done in 2 hours after you start it". This made it possible to have things start at, say, 03:32:53 and finish at 04:23:38.

The other thing tribalwars did was have each world use a different prefix in the domain. For example "world1.outpost-online.com" and so on.

I like how the website looks and what the two screenshots show.  Good luck on this project. :)

Looks interesting. So is it supposed to play a lot like those online strategy games where you build things in realtime (ie 1m 13s) and gain resources in realtime (ie 892 Metals per Hour or .25 Metals per second)?
