Title: Files for my site
Post by: plymoth45 on January 18, 2004, 03:32:43 PM
Would anyone like any of their op2 files on my site? if so, post them here and i will add the link to my download page.

PS. Would it be a good idea to have part of the op2 iso online for people to download?

well, I have an idea... we could dramatically reduce the size of the game first, BEFORE packaging it.

This is how I'd do it:

1) Use different codecs for the videos. They use Indeo 4, which is so old it makes me wanna scream. They could be recompressed using the DivX codec instead.

2) Downsample all the sounds in voices.vol and sound.vol... They don't need to be as good as they are.

3) Same thing with the CLM file - doesn't have to be as hi-quality.

4) All the executable files (Outpost2.exe, *.dll, etc) could be packed.

5) The other VOL's and OP2_ART.bmp could be compressed using MS Cabinet or something. (Very, Very good compression... probably the best there is right now)

I could probably do this "downsizing" if need be.

But after u re-do the videos to different codex, how will the game play them if it can only recognize Indego 5?

You guys could try using the method that I use for playin' OP2:
24MB ISO
18MB Install files <---used zip compression (unziped=43.8MB)
1 reg key
1MB One copy of nero image drive

Total=43MB

Thats how I'm able to play OP2. Just in case my comp needs a format I just install and setup those. Thats the smallest I'm able to bring it down.

just one thing, i'm running windows, not linux, and that would be nice of u, just it would take a while to upload onto my site, uploading it somewhere else would be better, then give me the link.

Note that putting the ISO up for FREE is a violation of nearly every copyright law imaginable..

Sierra/Dynamix specifically stated that we can hack or whatever so long as we didn't give the game out for free.

Anyway, a link to that site would violate my host's TOS.

Xfir what if we have it for backup Purposes only. If somebody still has the game but it is damaged and can't use it, can we give them backup copys of the game and tell them were to get it only on a need to know base. Having a backup copy doesn't go agaist the TOS am I right? Plus, Plymoth I compressed the 4 game files as far down as 24.4MB and I'm running WinXP PRO .  I only use linux on another machine I have.

No, but distributing it does.

Yes, the plan would be good, but like I said, you'd be in violation of a lot of copyright laws.
