Title: Irc Server
Post by: Freeza-CII on September 04, 2011, 05:16:07 PM
So after a while of trying to get ahold of the people that are capable of doing the server side s***. It looks like we have been abandoned or atleast forgotten. I am unable to get ahold of galactic who has physical access to the machine and Blackbox who has remote access. I would just suggest migration to another server at this point if it has not happned already. How ever this does present more problem if the forums are to go down and black box and galactic are not around. we will just have to cross that bridge when it comes.

As for IRC servers I would suggest that no one use a irc server that is some ones personal computer or a basement lab ect. it should be some thing that is alot more reliable. Im not sure if quakenet is still around but i am sure there are alot of other permanet irc servers we can take advantage of.

99chats is both similar enough to irc software(that is if its not irc software itself) and reliable enough that i think we could easily function with a move such as that.

i think we should just stick to irc.

I have one in the cloud, but I'm not entirely sure what the regs are on hosting an IRC server on it; and little IRC experience to boot. Assuming I can get some help in that field, We can make this happen.

You can always just create a channel on pre-existing and well established IRC network. There is no real need to run our own servers if we stick with IRC.

Mind you, there may be better alternatives out there. I remember there was some discussion some time back about possibly switching to something different.

When reading http://forum.outpost2.net/index.php?showtopic=5278 (http://forum.outpost2.net/index.php?showtopic=5278) I'm getting the impression that our admins are aware of the problem and are working on a solution.

Until our admins present us this solution, we can use an alternative though. For that I'd stick to irc, because thats what most people here are familiar with and it is ad-free. Not sure whether we should go back to Quakenet where we've been years ago or maybe to another irc network.

It would seem to me based on the timeframe of the topics and the amount of time IRC has been down that the present admins just don't see it as a priority. Not much in the way of status updates, just a basic "We're working on it" post. -Shrugs- I guess its not that big of a deal. My offer with a cloud server still stands if any interest is generated.

I wouldn't mind using any irc server as long as its controlled by people who I trust.

A problem that I see is, we're not allowed to advertise places which are not directly controlled by opu. That makes it basically impossible to make people use our alternative.

Other than that NNS package that was loaded with settings that already pointed to the irc.outpost2.net. I suppose the easiest solution there would be to find out who owns that DNS record and have it point to another server. But if the admins are less than responsive, this is probably easier said than done.

@TH300
I see your point with the concept of getting the word out. I guess the idea is to create a good starting point for the people here to congregate and set up games rather than to try and generate more traffic than its worth. From some of the posts I've seen there are people who thing this game is 'dead', so I doubt we'd see a large influx of users, but it would be nice to have a center point for everyone.

I am not talking about a "large influx". I am talking about a "center point for everyone". Still same problem.

I anyway doubt that people will come to a place that is not officially part of opu.

I wasn't trying to insinuate any kind of banch off or 'splinter' (to be politically correct) server, but just to host the OPU IRC off of the cloud server I have.

No big deal either way I suppose.

The IRC Server is offline now. I was having to pay extra to host it on a different server due to the fact that our dedicated server provider does not allow IRC hosted on it. Blackbox and I have created an alternate chat method to use in place of IRC.

Thanks for the alternative. It doesn't seem to be ready though. I was unable to create an account. No descriptive error message, just that it is unable to create the account.

Meh, I guess I'm out. Never have been a big fan of Spark. Used it in plenty of places, never quite had it work the way it was supposed to.

It says my account already exists. Is it reusing the IRC account information, or is this from that alternate client thing we tested out so long ago that I can barely remember about?

TH300: Im not sure what is wrong. I just tested it on my client and was able to create a user account no problem. Did you make sure to put outpost2.net as the server name?

Savant: It uses XMPP protocol. Spark is not required. You can connect to it with any XMPP client. I gave a couple examples on the webpage.

Hooman: I deleted your account, you should be able to recreate it now.

Ok, seems to work for me now. Looks reasonably straigh forward to use. Probably less intimidating for new users than IRC was.

Turned out that I cannot use certain characters in my password (either '&' or '=' or both).

Here are some more generic directions for setting up another client (the specific client I am giving directions for is Adium 1.4.3 as that's what I use, but it can be applied to similar clients such as Pidgin which is available for Windows and Linux, or iChat), since the Spark client is really not that great in my opinion. Any client that supports Jabber/XMPP can be used:

1. Go to the menu Adium > Preferences, switch to the Accounts tab
2. Press the + button and select Jabber from the list of account types
3. In "Jabber ID" enter "yourname@outpost2.net" (replace yourname with some kind of username that you want to use, if you already have an account use that one).
4. In "Password" enter a password.

If you already have an account skip to step 6 below, otherwise keep reading:

5. Press Register New Account. In the window that pops up, type outpost2.net into the Server field and press Request New Account. Another window should pop up asking for a username, full name, email address, and password. Username should be the part before the @ sign in the Jabber ID field on the previous screen. Full name does not need to be your real name (and probably shouldn't if you are concerned about privacy). Press OK and your account should get set up.

6. You may wish to go to the personal tab and set your alias to be something reasonable (by default Adium will use your Mac account information which may be undesirable if you use your full name or an icon of you for your account) if you are concerned about privacy. Similarly, on the options tab you may wish to change the contents of the resource field (it defaults to your computer name which in my case was "<my full name>'s-MacBook-Pro" and people can see this if they add you as a contact).

7. Press OK to create the account, and let it connect. (You may see warnings about a certificate error since we don't have a real SSL certificate; this is ok and you can ignore this. I ended up adding the certificate to my keychain to prevent it from complaining).

8. Go to File > Join Group Chat, enter "outpost2" into the chat room name, the rest of the settings can be left at defaults (you may wish to change the handle if you didn't change the alias information above). Press Join and you should see a chat window pop up.

You may wish to add the resulting chat room as a contact for easy access in your contact list when you start Adium in the future.

Happy chatting!

There is one other thing that may be of interest to people who use other XMPP services such as Google Talk. Server-to-server federation should be working which should allow you to chat with other contacts on different XMPP servers, if you use their full username@server when creating the contact. It worked for me with Google Talk, I did have problems with another 3rd party server but it may have been that server's configuration (ours is correct as far as I can tell to allow federation to work).
