Title: Bad Day On New Terra
Post by: Sirbomber on January 25, 2010, 03:10:43 PM
Things just haven't been the same since New Terra's orbit brought it dangerously close to a plot hole.  The planet's rotational period has gone berserk, so a day lasts about 10 seconds.  Also, disasters have become more frequent and more dangerous.  Clearly, that plot hole is making New Terra a dangerous place!  The only option is to evacuate the planet.  Better hurry though; at this rate it's only a matter of time before uber-Blight spawns for no apparent reason!

In case you haven't figured it out yet, this is a Survivor map.  Also, the day/night cycle has gone totally berserk!  Have fun!

The map is ready, other than the bane of my existence: ore.

Speaking of ore, this map is unlike any other Survivor map because you have to actually move CLOSER to the Blight if you want any decent ore.

plymouth 3 I believe...but sometimes the ore is random...depending on the difficulty I think.

bomber, how close are we talking here?  1-5 loads before you're overrun?

Well, this is how the game works:

The band of daylight travels across the entire map in about 5 seconds.  This allows the Blight (spread speed 1000) to grow for a bit.  Then you have about 150 marks of total darkness.  Then the cycle repeats.

So, a good strategy may be to rush to build an outpost in the middle of the map so you have access to the best ore.  Of course, that outpost won't last too long, even with Microbe Walls!

Edit: Just because the "story" is silly doesn't mean it's an easy map.  It'll actually be pretty tough, I think.

You have inspired me to do a small experiment involving mining beacons this weekend...just need to remember to do it, heh

Oh?  Now I'm curious...  What kind of experiment?

I'm afraid that if I tell you, you'll make the results non-applicable for your map :P

I'd work on it tonight, but for some reason OP2 isn't working on my laptop

This will probably be ready in time for tomorrow's Friday Bash.  I hate setting up ore...

I also need a suitable name for it...

Nah, that's just a goofy temp name.

Survivor games are supposed to have serious, yet relevant, titles.  They should convey a sense of dread, since the general story behind them is "The Blight is going to kill you all".

Edit: Since it's now ready for release, here's a more serious story.

The colony's top scientists are baffled.  The people are panicking, and their leaders don't know what to tell them.  New Terra's orbit has been drastically altered by some unknown force, causing it to spin wildly around its axis.  Disasters of unprecedented intensity threaten humanity's very existence.  And just moments ago, an isolated lab working on terraforming technology indicated a containment breach had occurred due to a severe seismic event.  The last message sent before communications abruptly ended was "run".

It's the end of the world.  Escape is the only option.

anguish, dejection, desperation, despondence, discouragement, disheartenment, forlornness, misery, or tribulation?

The volcanoes won't work.  I'll add them in for a later release.

It's weird... I've used the same function on all sorts of maps with no problems...

Anyways, here's the download link:

The link will also be added to the first post.

Some tips:
-You must move towards the Blight if you want to get better ore.
-You can ally with the other players... Or not.  Seeing as how you don't move your main base, you can focus more of your resources (and attention) on offense and defense than on other maps.
-Please let me know if anything bad happens.
