Most games today in the market are produced with support to joysticks and other gamepads...so i've been thinking...why not do so for this one??
Good stuff:
*Would be fun to control linx from a joystick eh?
*Fun to master new controls
Bad stuff:
*Controlling would be much more difficult to control the game
*Difficulty to assign hotkeys (outpost HAS lots of hotkeys right?)
And talking about hotkeys...its time we discussed new ones
Of course, hotkeys in outpost 2 WERE useful...but my opinion is that players rarely used them because or they werent needed orwere just too boring or obvious to use...so how about we make VERY close shortkeys to VERY long commands? Like a store function
system!
What, you dont get it? Lemme....EXPLAIN
supposed players wanted to do a rescearch in a free game mode...but they aren't sure what to rescearch...while he thinks he looses valuable time...and resources!
So we make hotkeys for different types of rescearch!
Supposed you wanted the stickfoam weapon A>S>A>P
So you pres certain hotkey...and the computer will automatically rescearch the apropriate topics until the stickfoam weapo is available! Got it?
We could even add a ring to warn the player that the "queued rescearch" is ready.
Good stuff:
Would completely ease the pressure on the player by 25%
Bad stuff:
would take away the chance to player choose what to rescearch

Because RTS games play like s*** with joysticks and gamepads. And games that play themselves are pointless.

I don't know of any RTS game for the PC that has joystick or gamepad support. I don't know why on earth you would even want to use that sort of device to control the game anyway.
The only RTSes that have joystick / gamepad support are the few that run on game consoles (since those types of controllers are the only available on those platforms). The mouse and keyboard are superior to those.
Regarding the "automatic research" thing, if a player isn't sure what to research, they need more practice. Sorry, but learning the tech tree is part of the learning curve for the game -- and I don't think we should add features like that for users who don't care to learn the game at all.
Basically, by adding a feature like that, the game begins to play itself. That is not what anyone wants.

You dont see to many RTS on consoles for a reason. Unless they come with there own UBER controler

Multi-touch screen + Starcraft = win.

Get us all multiple touch screen monitors then :P
-
With the risk of sounding stupid, what exactly is a multiple touch screen monitor?

Try "monitors".
-
A series of touch-screen monitors.
i.e. each monitor has a touch screen built in, and you have more than one of them...
And yeah, they aren't cheap. But it would be really fun to play an RTS on them (assuming you could get accurate enough for clicking on / selecting things, which might be difficult at a high res).
And replace Starcraft with Outpost 2. This is OPU after all (and Starcraft has been greatly diminished, thanks to the "1337 5cR1p4 k1dd135" that inhabit battle.net).

Made the SC comment because of these geeks :P

Ugh, so slow. You need keyboard shortcuts for an RTS. Although, I'm sure that must have been somewhat fun to try.
-
Maybe it'd work better if the UI was made with that in mind, like making buttons off to the side that select unit groups, etc.
-
Homeworld 1/2 with Voice recognition is amazing too. Definately not quick; but its very fun.
Squad One, Delta Formation, Aggressive Tactics!
"Squad One, Delta Formation Confirmed, Switching power to weapons"
*two minutes later*
"Squad One under attack."
Squad One: "Under heavy fire, requesting assistance!"
Squad One, Evasive Tactics, Return to base!
Squad One: "Evasive Tactics Confirmed, Docking with Mothership(or carrier or what not)."
Sorry heh, it was a decent integration of mouse/voice/keyboard.
And just straight up fun.
-
Voice-recognition + Games = Fail
I can see it now...
"Entire army! Return to base!"
"Self destruct order acknowledged." (all of your units kill themselves, and possibly several buildings, just for laughs)
The point is, let's just stick with a mouse and keyboard guys...
-
If the voice recognition was well-made, it would be fine.
Besides, it wouldn't be efficient in hardcore games, so it would never hinder people who don't care for it.
-
Nothing is well made as it has to be pushed out the door ASAP.
Plus for multi touch screens get a DS you fools!!! please dont ill kill you.
OP2 on a tablet was pretty fun using the pen for every thing. About as fast as using a mouse but fun.
Voice rec for game controls would be stupid as it wouldnt beable to understand most people.
-
The DS has only 1 touch screen... the other screen is a normal one.

Don't say stuff like that Freeza, or hoards of fanboys will eat you alive, and then eat us because we're associated with you.
