I am now seriously looking at an upgrade.

I am an admin at the the DEGC boards ( http://degc.xfir.net/forum (http://degc.xfir.net/forum) ), which uses the newest version. It looks awesome and applies a general good charm to it. Not to mention, it also has a method of showing the Spiders that comb the sites... for instance, instead of seeing \"guest\" you'll see Googebot or Lycos.. which is great.

So, now I ask again: Should we upgrade?

I like the new version, it is very stable and adds features that can be helpful (Quick reply comes premodded in).

I may also restate: We will NOT lose the shoutbox, I can easily implement it. Don't worry about spell check either, it's another easy mod.

I also like the \"warn\" feature they implemented. Also, I can allow Moderators to Ban (freaky, eh?).

All I see is postive aspects....

Now for the negative:

Not everything will be online instantly. I will need time to modify the source files to reimplement the shoutbox and spell check (both are relatively easy). We will lose the skins, but they too can easily be fixed.

But, they do not constitue enough for an arguement against the upgrade.

Now, if we do this, I will have to take the boards offline to implement the upgrade.

I will give one week for you to POST whether or not you want it. Please post your comments/arguements in this thread. If you do not post, I will take it you don't care and will continue with the upgrade.

I give my vote for an update, because all reasons I had against an update are dispelled now.
A short off-time is acceptable.

Also, let me note that we will not lose any topics or posts. Also, the shoutbox's database will remain intact.

The only thing we may lose would be the attachments.. but I do not think they changed the attachment protocol, so there is a slim chance of losing them.

Of Course we should upgrade. It would obviously have more security fixes.


Xfir, I could help you restore the mods etc, so it would be a lot faster to upgrade.

The skins too, we could fix.

I think that the Shoutbox is more or less compatable with any forum.. but I will have to test it..

I am going to upgrade the xfir.net forums soon... to 1.3 (I think it's out now).
