Title: The Outpost Times
Post by: OP2Patriot on August 24, 2003, 01:19:13 PM
Sometime soon, I'm going to launch my own webzine. I had originally planned for September 1, but due to a hot story, I will probably publish sometime this week. Maybe even today. Once I do, I will post the link, and xfir is hosting the site.

I heard it strait from Martyn, who is working on it. He got it working a lot sooner than he thought he would have a week ago, which was when I first wrote an article about the server. I modified the article I already had written to include the good news.

Hehe.. I tested the client. It's interesting. Last I checked, the client will let you start games, but the join code isn't up to par yet.

AND NO IM NOT LIEING, HOW CAN ANY1 ACCUSE ME OF THAT   just because others secrewed up, dont mean i will

i need to have it finsihed very soon, school starts again soon, and last year i failed all my college exams, so i need focus 100% in skl this year

Yep, its true.

I'm not mad, he explained it to me how it works.....

Neither of us can take all the credit because we each told each other how to accomplish certain things.

If we hadn't worked together..... nothing would have been done.

Edit: I'm not mad.... i just came back from the world's greatest rollercoaster park... lol

Folks, first the belief that martyn was kidding should be dead by now. If I can trust him, we can't you all do the same? As for the logo, I slapped it together from photos on the Outpost 1.5 CD. I don't want to change the slogan to "only source." Competition would be healthy and promote higher standards of reporting. I know there is practically no competition, but I would welcome competition. (No, martyn, don't start one! Nooooo [jk]) Law in the county I'm in dictates that I spend at least 4 1/2 hours on schoolwork. That includes homework, and being taught. I am going to do Chemistry online, and I watch my math lessons on video tape. (So I forward through when I already get a concept, and rewind when I can't understand it) Things work out very well for me on a homeschool schedule, making me capable of serving in the capacity that I already do. To put it shortly, I have a lot of time on my hands on weekdays.

True, but you don't have to go to the best colleges/universities to get the most of the best jobs. Lots of places out there.

September 15. I had published sooner than I had planned when I first started work on it. At the moment, I'm not writing anything because it might not be valid news 2+ weeks from now. Maybe I could do weekly.

I like the idea of the multiplayer server.  The only problem is, most of the "old players" gave up looking to play a long time ago.  It took me months to find an active OP2 site, after I realized WON was taken down.
Title: The Outpost Times
Post by: Betaray on August 26, 2003, 09:35:45 PM
looks like you found one lol

and if we can get word out that an alturnitive to WON exists, than I bet we could find those other gamers
Title: The Outpost Times
Post by: Jake on August 26, 2003, 09:39:20 PM
Yeah, how long has WON been down?  Took me that long to find this here place  :P

And it wasn't even here, was another site...and they forwarded me here, so... :D

Post by: Betaray on August 26, 2003, 09:54:57 PM
lol. we have contacts from alot of sites, its been about 1 or 2 years now I cant remember lol, but I think if we could find their icq or aim or msn or whatever, we could tell them that it still exists

if that dosnt work, we can just hope that one day the do a google search for op2 and find that the won replacement exists

Multiplayer Server Update, 8:30 AM EDT, August 27 2003:

Martyn and I are *really* close to being done with this.

We just need to work out a few things that are unfinished, like finishing the implementation of the new game, some safe guards to keep people from doing things they shouldn't, and finish writing the DLL that provides the integration from OP2 to the multiplay client.

The multiplayer client will include an extra with it, that being my beta of the op2 mapper. (It works well enough that it can be used to create maps, however large maps don't work properly at this time (the full world map sizes).)

We'll be all set to go once we finish the final testing.

If I have any new information, I'll post it here.
Title: The Outpost Times
Post by: OP2Patriot on August 27, 2003, 02:11:19 PM
We'll probably have one or two new sites as a result of the public release of the beta map editor.

Forgot to ask, will it be compatible with Firewalls w/ routers?  I remember I couldn't connect to IP games on OP2 when WON was down because the router's firewall didn't work w/ it.
Title: The Outpost Times
Post by: OP2Patriot on August 27, 2003, 04:25:05 PM
As long as the proper UDP ports are open, I don't see a problem.
Title: The Outpost Times
Post by: Martynd on August 27, 2003, 04:48:30 PM
well no game is firewall proof, if theres blocks, theres blocks

however the client will come witht he ports that need to be open/forwarded
Title: The Outpost Times
Post by: Betaray on August 27, 2003, 05:13:26 PM
even with a firewall, cant you disable spesific things so that the game will run?
Title: The Outpost Times
Post by: BlackBox on August 27, 2003, 05:46:11 PM
Okay. It will NOT run over a network, (thats how it always was) unless the router is set-up to send the packets to one and ONLY ONE computer on the network.

These are the ports you need to open for use of OP2 and the network system:

15101 and 15102 - network communication
47776 thru 47807 - OP2 communication (if you are to play multiplayer games)

If you plan to use the multiplayer system for chat only, you don't need to add for the OP2 ports, only the network ports.

important: * All ports are UDP (user datagram protocol) ports!!! *

Or, if your firewall allows "disable by program", just set it to allow Outpost2.exe and Client.exe (the network program)
The above right here (by program) may not work, as my friend tried it and it doesn't work.

If all fails you may need to completely shut off your firewall for the OP2 session.

Title: The Outpost Times
Post by: CK9 on August 28, 2003, 08:01:30 PM
phil, that meens you see things 10 feet away that you should see 20 feet away:

where you should see it/where you do see it.

20/20 is normal

15/20 is pretty good eyesight

5/20 is amazing eyesight
Title: The Outpost Times
Post by: BlackBox on August 29, 2003, 07:38:08 AM
you really have 20/10 vision?

They told me I have somewhere around 20/25 in my right eye and 20/30 or 20/35 in my left eye.

I also found out that when you look at those letters (the ones that you have to read to tell them if you can see them) if you can read the number on the far right, say its X, if thats the smallest line you can read, then your vision is 20/X.

CK9, I actually had this argument once and won. For example, I recall when my sister had 20/60 vision. She had to get glasses. In World War II, before radar, pilots had to spot enemy aircraft before the enemy spotted them. There were some pilots with 20/1 vision.

The eye dr. told me that if you have vision worse than 20/40 here in Michigan, you can't pass the driver's test, therefore you can't drive.

I seem to be the lucky one in my family. From my 9 years old brother to my 40-something mom (I'm forbidden to say exact age online), they all wear glasses, or contacts. That is one reason why I'm asked sometimes if I wear contacts.
Title: The Outpost Times
Post by: BlackBox on August 29, 2003, 08:51:11 AM
I wear glasses, but people think I look better without them..

Anyway, this is getting off topic.

Possibly, if I want to do weekly, I'd have to release Sunday. The question is, what is going to happen that will take up 2 or 3 articles? Can you make news happen?

Not unless I have some news I know not of brought to my attension, or I do a Day in the Life of OP2Patriot. I've also considered maybe recording an MP3 of me dramatizing the news. Maybe an interview with someone, or I'll get xfir to talk about his forum.

Status update: I have half of the September issue ready. I am not going to write about the multiplayer server until a day or two before publication of the next issue. I do plan on interviewing Garrett for the September 30 issue. I have another article being edited now, so that leaves the multiplayer server and another article slot open. If you have any news to report, post it here or contact me on AIM or at my e-mail.
