We Demand That Classic Seirra Games Such As Outpost 2 are Re-Released in New, Updated Forms With Improved Features, such as Improved Graphics and a New Multiplayer Server Similar to the old WON System that People from Around the World can Play on.
Post if you agree!
-
Good idea. The Petition will be somewhat like the first post, though if anybody has new ideas, they can add onto it.
-
I'll sign it.
-
Me too lol. And to at least store the updates!
-
Just as long as the graphics aren't out of my computer's league, I'll sighn.
-
Um, if we want this, we'll have to make it ourselves.
They can't mod the game easily - the source code is destroyed.
And to hire programmers to do it = $$$
-
Well, they'll get money for doing it, won't they?
-
they don't think they will get enough money from it to make up for the spendings.
-
i'll sign regardless of $$$. If worse comes to worse we can all pitch in some money.
-
every1 get on the forum chat room (#Outpost2 on QuakeNet) and keep playing op2!
-
Where art thou petition?
-
*walks in to the room* keep it up good people *leaves*

I've misunderstood the thing. Of course I'd support a petition.
----- my 200th post -----

i'm busy with school, but i'm only in high school. I have the time for it (barely), but, as i'm sure you all know by now, i'm still waiting to get my personel comp back.
-
Things are way to crazy for some people. But, as for me, My school is nearing the end.... NO MoRe SChOol yeppy!!! I'm in the process of looking for a new ISP and switching so maybe then I can finally get some games in.
-
:) i just learned that yesterday was mid-term for this quarter, that means only 1 month of school left!! :D :D :D
-
I only have 2-3 weeks left. Yep, college is better than High School. I had to see it to believe it, and I've seen it.
Anyways, back on topic. If you write a petition, I'll sign it. Well, eventually anyways...
-
Where is the petition?
-
Modding the game would be impossible at this point. The source is in oblivion. You'd have to rewrite the whole game. An OP2 sequel that is true 3D would be interesting, using lighting effects as well... however, my ideas for that got a bit extreme, but they would be nice.
-
This is the Petition. And the source code must be someplace. But if they have to redo it, at least they already have a large portion of the game already done. It's easier to redo something that exists, even if it's been destroyed, then to invent something completely new. Also, since most of the stuff already exists, and would just have to be updated, it would be less work than creating a whole new game. Thus, it would cost less than to create a whole new game because it's an update. it would need fewer people working on it.
-
No, the source is gone.... I've verified that with the lead programmer... They'd have to redo the whole game in order to change it :(
-
What is it a petition for, and what is the competition.
-
Hmm...
Well, I suppose one way to look at it is that it's gone forever...
Another way to look at it is that it's still possible, but would require a little more work, but still less than recreating the game from scratch. The source code would have to be redone, but most things would just have to have a "tune up," so to speak. Okay, so it might not be incredibly easy... "but nothing worth doing is ever easy."
-
The first thing you'd need is an art extractor, but the current one is "buggy, can't save, and not available for download". I'd make one, except I'm not much of a hacker, and don't see why I should try when someone has already done it.
No, what I'll probably do is make a mapper like warcraft 2's(drag terrain), then whine to op2hacker for help on the format. :P
-
I know how the OP2_ART.BMP is formatted, it's very basic... I also know some about how the image wells are formatted, and the 1st part of the PRT.... but I don't know anything about the PRT beyond the palettes.
-
It may be basic, but if you don't know, you don't know. :P
Would you care to enlighten me? :)
-
Of course Ill sign but is the source code REALLY destroyed??
NOOO!!!
:(
-
yes it is Nightmare
-
They didn't even keep a backup copy? Why the hell would anyone just kill their sourc code ?
-
Yes i think they backupped it in the development time. then they simply pressed <delete> and distributed the game...
Sierra was evil.... B)
Ill sign...
-
Hmmm Ill have a talk wiht the lead programmer <_<...
-
lol just dont lets the feeling of Sierra get you and force you to join... the Sierraists!
-
If there was a petition, I'd sign. I just wish there was still hope with source code.
And why would anyone want to make a 3D sequel? What would that really add to the game? All I can see is that it would make my computer lag because I'm never gonig to get a good computer/graphics card.
Long live 2D games! Long live :op2: !
-
Hey, dont worry i thought that 4 years ago too... two days later i got a new processor, video card, memory and sound card... lol
Btw, isnt there a way to reverse engineer the whole game?
-
Btw, isnt there a way to reverse engineer the whole game?
You mean over 400000 lines of assembly?
Count me out. That would take many many years. It would be faster to just start from scratch. I guess if you wanted to make a clone that was very accurate to the original, then you could just reverse engineer parts of it. (Large parts of it). But then again, I think you should get a good enough idea about how it works from playing it. Besides, the original is a little unbalanced at times. I'm somewhat content with making small tweaks to the original while waiting for one of the OP3 projects to arrive.
-
Well the Edenians and Plymouthians reverse engineered THEIR databases in a quick while so maybe we could rewrite it? IDK...
^_^
