Patch idea
-
I would prefer this as a custom level opt-in only option. This has potential to impact the campaign and existing levels quite a bit. Some of these options are actually pretty close to cheating in effect.
-
True that. Thought I'd make the poll nonetheless.
-
I feel there is still some merit to the question. I just think a few restrictions need to be attached to the idea before it becomes a good idea.
Mind you, disaster walls might still be susceptible to other natural disasters, or perhaps direct enemy attack. That could add an interesting dimension to the game. ;)

Well, if you are using lava walls to stop a lava river because you wanted to mine a LV 3 yield common mine and you kept the mine heavily defended, attacking the lava walls would be cause for concern.
I'd suggest just making them last longer compared to what they are trying to hold back, not against direct weapons fire or other disasters... then thatd make them too powerful.
-
I forget, do multiple layers of a special wall increase the duration of the layer in contact? If not, I think that would be a good middle-ground to consider.
-
Mmm, not particularly no. Just delays the inevitable for that much longer.
IE if you have a three layer Lava Wall against an impending lava flow, the individual walls hold up for the same period of time. It just takes longer for the lava flow to get through.
One thing I've really not liked about lava flows is that there is a "minimum" distance to consider. Like you can't build a lava wall onto the square the lava will go onto. Also, you can't build anything too close to it either when the flow isn't increasing.
-
I think it does in some missions...I remember actually stopping the lava flow in the plym campeign in the first mission where eden is actively attacking.
-
Well it also depends on how fast the lava comes out too. Some lava comes out slow, and does damage slowly overtime, and other lava comes out fast and destroys everything in its path.
EX. In plymouth colony on Normal, when the lava comes out and is near your mine (the mine at your starter base), it doesn't automatically flow over it (most of the time anyway) and instead deals 10% damage to it till its destroyed. In other places the lava flows so fast that it destroys it completely right away.
Thats why sometimes a vehicle driving next to a lava flow will blow up even though lava hasn't entered into its space.

The Survivor Tech Tree has an additional tech that makes blight walls last longer (maybe even 2 techs, don't remember).
Those techs could be added to the default multiplayer tech tree. This would leave singleplayer (especially the campaign) unchanged.
-
You can get the blight in multiplayer? I didn't know that.
-
Maybe you should play more multiplayer, then.
-
I also like Arklons work in CCF2. That way you can build walls on the squares next to the lava :)
-
The spread speed of lava/bight also determines how much damage they do to a wall/building they want to spread onto, on every cycle.
