We cannot deny that Outpost 2 was not the best game ever created. There are multiple problems, most notably in the battle section.
Yet. . .here we are, on a forum, playing it years after its release.
What is in this game that makes us so addicted that we hang onto a game that nobody has ever heard of?
-
the fact that it exists and still runs on modern computers may have something to do with it.
also the blight. its purple, and it melts your face. Whats not to like?
-
Because it is a real game, not one filled with random crap and pretty graphics to wow the user and hide the fact that the gameplay sucks.
-
because i can do cool things to it and the community semi-tolerates me.
i just changed the o2.htm file in the outpost2 iso to link to this site.
this is the new code.

becuase we get to be yelled at by bomber when we lose (which is 99% chance, unless you lev, then is 3.14% chance) :P
-
:D i get yelled at by him without playing.

I like the game because I find it more realistic somehow.
*Unlike most other game, you need a lab + scientists to research new technologies (and there are alot of them), not just build a building for instant new weapons.
* Realistic resource collection, not just 1 unit building your buildings and collecting all your resources.
* Having to watch amount of colonists, food and morale to survive, no just build a "home" for instant 10 more population.
And I remember I liked reading the novella when I first went through the game.
-
An actual balance between sides, despite obvious advantages based on game length.
-
I still love it :)
-
And the door bell sound when you click on the residents, my parents thought it was our door bell :P
-
Hehe.
I just liked the mood. There's something about "You have done well, our colony is surviving" that appeals to me. I also enjoy the city builder likes games, and like that there is less emphasis on combat, but still enough to give focus to the game, rather than completely open ended like Sim City. (Well ok, you can go bankrupt in Sim City, but when does that ever really happen?) Basically, there's enough stimulus that you have to react to, and a few extra things you can do if you want, like kill the computer before launching a space ship. I also liked how research carried over between levels in the campaign.
But yeah, combat always did seem a bit tacked on and like it didn't integrate all that well with the rest of the game. There are definately some balance issues, and a few potentially pointless options. Starflare guard posts? Supernova guard posts? Heck, even starflare/supernova tigers and panthers? Scouts? (Yes, I know, but really? That's it?) Self destruct? (Couple that with scouts) Recreation facilities? The interaction between the population growth/death model and medical centers? Early/late game balance between Eden/Plymouth players? Balance between Plymouth vs. Plymouth multiplayer games? (Who gets missiles first? Oh..., no meteor defense for the other person) Scorpions? No use for magma vents or fumaroles for Plymouth? Stickyfoam stops units rather than just slows them down? Having your CC disabled, but not destroyed ends the game? What if you could have repaired it? What about having another CC kit ready to be built? A single meteor defense can track any number of incomming missiles, but two of them won't offer any extra protection?
Although, probably the biggest disappointment, you can't use a meteor defense to shoot down an evacuation module. <_<

I always thought that was the point. Afterall, the two sides coexisted peacefully before the blight event, so they wouldn't have very much in the way of combat tactics and stuff. Or did you mean something else?
I like older games. They don't have a million different controls to remember, and don't require a disk the the drive (with some exception) when you have the files on the computer (I don't remember how, but I got Lords of the Realm 2 to run without the disk). Plus, I don't have to have the best graphics card in the world to play them right (try playing Call of Duty 2 with an outdated graphics card. It's funny because you can see through walls, but you can't always find the doorway).

i would like to correct you on the bolded. prior to lev releasing a downloadable version of outpost with all patches and a no-cd crack built in, you were required to have the CD to play it. in fact i still have my CD it's just scratched all to hell oh and might i add he took out the cheats that the PA clan used to use every game (which is why they were bad ass in the day's of WON)
-
well that's you. I remember quite clearly being able to play OP2 without the disk while WON was still up...just couldn't do multiplayer without a game crash.
-
must've had a cracked version right off...idk

You sure about that? Maybe the CD was in but you didn't realize it...
I found I always needed the CD (unless you copied a bunch of files off the CD; then it might work, but I can't be sure about that since I never tried it).
-
i never played won but single player was with cs most certain couse i remember donwloading a no cd crack ~.~

- and doesn't play on milking a franchise
- and actually has a story that makes sense

I think you mean "and actually has a story" ("OMFG ALIENZ R ATAXN US!!111" is not a story, it's a cliche).
-
its a cliche since the late 50ts
i wish there where more novels from outpost -_-
