I was bored; answer away.
Edit: I'm referring to the majority of people, not the odd one or two people you may actually know/have met.
-
LOL It depends on who talks to me on IRC if it be Friend Foe or Text.
-
Well me and Mez are the only UK users around here and we met in real life after meeting on WON back in the day.
I consider the long term users around here friends. Kosh and me used to talk a lot and have known each other for years.
-
hmmm.. hard one
I consider some friends and some acquaintances but most ppl here friends that I have been talking to for a while even though I have not met them.
but everyone here gets along...
-
I vote Acquaintances. I don't think any of you would block a bullet for me :P
Kidding. I don't know why not friends? It's a difficult term... Maybe, beacuse, i haven't seen any of you in RL. Just as a word on the monitor, never a pic of you (except Freeza and his Mr. Chainsaw :P )
Actually I give 50:50 to Acquaintances and Friends.
-
I vote "words on the monitor", no offense intended, but thats how I look at everyone on the internet.
People on the internet are the sum of the things they say, there is really nothing else to go on.
That doesn't mean that anybody here is less "real" to me, merely that people here are represented by something other than physical form, something that just happens to be "words on the monitor" (and avatars of course).
-
I would probably say acquaintances for most people here, at least in my case.
This is for a couple reasons:
- It's the internet. There is no way to prove someone is who they say they are. You have to evaluate a person based on who they seem to be.
- It can be kinda hard to get to know someone from what they do online. Especially if you don't communicate with them that often (after all, a lot of people are here just for games and such).
On the other hand I think you might be able to argue the case that some of the people who I've met on IRC could be better "friends" in one sense than some of the people I know in real life (I probably know more about certain people on IRC than some people I know in real life). Friend is a subjective term though. I think a true friend is one who will stick up for you and help you out even when it would be unpopular or uncool for them to do so (or easy for them to not care about you). At the same time, it's hard to tell whether someone you meet on the internet would do that for you, in which case people you know in real life might be better "friends" (even though you may know less about them personally).
-
True friends are rare and hard to make...
So... most people around are acquaintances, but some that I only see on very rare occasions and haven't interacted with in any way are just words on the screen.
-
Voted for the 3rd option.
I only talk to a couple of people in IRC about something other than previous or next OP2 game.
Some of the old WON members still lurking the dark corners of these forums I would perhaps stretch as far as calling aquaintances. Those I used to chat with when WON was still active, and know/knew better than the people I see on OPU every day.
-
words on the monitor
I never seen ont of the opu's visitors IRL
-
I say Acquaintances for the poll, but I always say, "Online friends"
I know none of you are going to hop on a plane just to see/abduct me, so that's how it's staying.
-
Why don't we all buy cheap web-cams and see each other? Something like a video conference :P
-
I must have a webcam under my home's computer, but not internet on <_<
the guys who should give me a connection are true snails <_<
-
I would have to say acquaintances but then I am new here. At the other forum I belong to ,motherboards.org (http://www.motherboards.org), I would have to say friends to most of the regulars there. I have been going to that site for some time now.
-
I saw Mez a few weeks back at the i-series LAN party i33 (bigest in the UK) :)

"Words on the monitor."
To the community's credit, I haven't been here that long. It seems to be a thriving place.

Yup
You going i34? I've booked+paid already.
-
Yeah same but I hope to go as staff :)

Nice, see you there in your coloured T-shirt then. I assume your wanting a job as a net admin, rather than helpdesk. Seeing as your the only one that can set up a ra3 server properly at these events!
