I'm new here, but I've played through all the campaigns and several colony games, and one thing that's driving me crazy is when I'm in the middle of something and I hear "Damage warning!" or "Structure destroyed!". I go to the location in question and see that where there previously was a building (usually a guard post) there is now just a pile of rubble. I'm pretty sure it's not an enemy (normal or 'suicide') because the explosion seems to come out of the blue and the screen is clear.
Do buildings randomly explode in Outpost? I seem to have the most trouble with guard posts, but I think I've had an Advanced lab explode on me as well (taking out a few nearby vehicles too as I recall).
So what's the dilly-o? :)

Some buildings will explode (randomly) when they are damaged. If you got the time, always repair damaged buildings ;)
Buildings that explode when damaged are:
Tokamaks (These will damage themselves over time), MHD generators, Solar power plants, Geothermal plants, Spaceports, Advanced Labs and Guard posts (Let me know if I missed any?)
Please note:
- All power plants will emit a EMP pulse + damage units in contact with them
- Spaceports and Advanced Labs have a large blast radius with high level of damage. (Keep this buildings away from vital parts of your colony)
Hope this helps.. :op2:

Heh... then I'm not going crazy :)
Thanks for the info!

Solar power arrays do not explode when damaged, nor do they produce an emp wave when they are destroyed.
Other then that your list is accurate.

I've noticed that about guard posts too actually. But I don't recall ever reading they explode when damaged.
Actually, I only really remember reading that tokamaks explode (and maybe advanced labs).
Where does it say this?
-
I don't know where it is written down, but all of those buildings do explode, especially guardposts. I usually have extra convecs to repair them because it seems to be so common (after minor skirmishes).
-
I know they have comments in the 'reference' section of the Outpost 2 printed manual. It probably mentions it in the help file too.
-
It is mentioned in both the printed manual and the help file. Its listed directly after the stats and discription of the building. Right beside Operational Notes.
-
actually this sounds like a good custom multiplayer map idea!
somehow incorporate exploding buildings into the map like 1 building will explode every 5 minutes but you wont know which one (except your CC) and the higher the mark, the more buildings explode to the point that eventually 1 building explodes every 30 seconds or so and the first person to lose all but their CC loses. sounds like fun.
-
Unless you lose your SF at the start, at which point its over anyway.
-
lol, that's why you build a second one ASAP
-
Thats why it would be nice to have unit/building stats built into the map so you could make structures very cheap and your score increases your ore, meaning you can build more structures and thus be safer from the explosions.

Ooh. I get nervous when I send convecs near those things.
I tend to have the bad luck of having those Guard Posts explode just as my Convec/Repair Vehicle/Spider comes in range of repairing...
I don't mind my Repair Vehicle or Spider getting destroyed, but my precious Convec is way more expensive than the Guard Post, especially early in the game.
What I do is to idle the badly damaged building first before repairing. Does this even help, or is my effort wasted?
-
Hmm, an excellent question. I've wondered this myself a few times but never bothered to check. Well, there's my project for the day. :)

Yes! Idled buildings shouldn't spontaneously explode. Also, buildings that are currently being dismantled also shouldn't explode, unless possibly they are tokamaks. I'm not too sure why they did that, but it appears a damaged tokamak can potentially explode while you are dismantling it.
Also, the chance of a building blowing up is about 3/500 to 12/500, depending on the level of damage, and the check occurs around every 12 time marks or so (not exact, but very close). Also, the building must have sustained at least 10% damage before it can blow up.
