The Magnetic defense shield is a structure that scans enemy fire, determines their charge and then fires a like magnetic pulse that dissipates the enemy fire. The draw back is that you can't shoot when the pulse fires but it is focused and only takes a second.
Statistics:Eden
Class:Guard Post
Magnetic pulse shield
HP:1400
Armor:Medium
FP:Anti weapons fire magnetic pulse (reduces damage taken by enemy fire by 80%)
Area of effect:7 square radius projection range
Power Required:100
Common Ore:2800
Rare Ore:400
Good:
A.Reduces enemy fire
B.Large area of affect
C.Capable of affecting multiple shots at any one time
Bad:
A.Power Hog
B.Only medium armor
C.On the expensive side
D.only reduces damage taken by enemy fire
E.Capable of affecting friendly fire
F.Requires tube connection (for pinpoint accuracy)
Hey they used magnetic shielding on both of the starships so why not use it on the planet (or hunk of rock).

Than plymouth should have an shield or anything like it.

Since New Terra's magnetic field is in flux, that would probably play havoc with such a system. Plus, more is required to deflect weapons fire other than magnetism. Magnetism would not, for example absorb or deflect laser fire unless it was of a magnitude greater than that of your average star. Even the magnetic force required to deflect a steel ball dropped gently to the ground would be massive. Even if you could generate such a field, you and any structure would be destroyed if located in or around the field.
The best method for shielding is the traditional kind. Ablative shielding for energy weapons and heavy armor for kinetic weapons.
Leave energy shields to the realm of less accurate games like Supreme Commander or C&C...

I think it would take a lot more power that what you posted. And like Horus said, it takes an awfully powerful magnetic field to deflect an object (or even to slow it down). Extreme magnetic fields are bad for not only metal (i.e. local buildings and vechs) but also bad for people.
Basically anything metal in the neighboring building would be slammed against the wall whenever the shield activated.
It's a thought, but I think the forum agreed that energy shields are beyond the technology level that OP is shooting for.

I can not say no loud enough. Shields are a big no no.
How ever i think you are some what talking about a EMP guard post to stop fire. There is a problem with this. only guided weapons would have a problem with this and as far as i know all the weapons are Unguided. With the exception of the RPG which seems to be wire guilded.

Hey they use magnetic shielding on tubes! So why can't you just blast them?
-
its already been decided shields are a no-go. and like has been said, it would require more than just a magnetic field no matter how intense it is. magnetic shielding most likely refers to some kind of structural integrity field that helps keep the flimsy tubes together when under stress and NOT as a way to completely deflect incoming fire.

Hey they use magnetic shielding on tubes! So why can't you just blast them?
You can't just blast them because it would be too easy to cripple a colony with little to no effort.
-
Hey they use magnetic shielding on tubes!
There is a difference from Magnetic shielding with material. And Magnetic shielding with a intense eletromagnet. Not to bust balls but my speaker wires are magneticly shielded.
Besides the tubes are underground its is really hard to blast them. For the sake of game play they are visible in op2.
-
Ahhh. so instead of using this structure we could make a technology that uses the tubes shielding on structures and vehicles to lower the damage taken by enemy fire. Only it wuld be about a 10% decrease in damage and would require more materials per vehicle.

Your magnetic pulse shield seems a lot like an EMP GP!
You can't just fire a magnetic shiel, it would have to be generated. Also electromagnets interere with electronics. So you could shield it, but you would also disable the building (like EMP does).
In the end why dont you just build an EMP GP to disable the enemy vechs?

Potentially could be another HP upgrade. But I think what Freeza is getting at is that the tubes are magnetically shielded meaning they are shielded against interference. Not that they use magnetics to shield from impact or energy damage. Like computer speakers are magnetically shielded to prevent them from messing up magetic media.
