I found these in newspapers, and at www.mosnews.com/;
A scientific conference dedicated to asteroid and comet security opened in the Practical Astronomy Institute in St. Petersburg on Monday, Russian news agencies report. One of its participants said that the 2004 MN4 asteroid could hit Earth in 2035, wiping out all life on the planet.
One of the scientists taking part in the conference, Viktor Shor of the Practical Astronomy Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said that at present many experts see a real threat of Earth’s collision with the 2004 MN 4 asteroid. Initially the collision was predicted for 2028, but the latest calculations show that in 2028 the asteroid will only pass very close to Earth. However, Shor says that his research predicts that the asteroid’s orbit could change and it may return in seven years this time crashing into the Earth’s surface.
Experts from the Russian Institute of Calculus Mathematics and Mathematical Physics also presented models of space-originated and landslide tsunamis. “A powerful asteroid impact on the ocean could cause tsunamis several hundred meters high,” the scientists said, adding that regular tsunamis caused by earthquakes rarely reach 50 meters high.
According to the model, the impact of a 500-meter asteroid traveling at a speed of 10-20 kilometers per second hitting the ocean would cause a circular wave 200-meters high. An asteroid 10 kilometers in diameter would cause a tsunami 4 kilometers high which would be about 400 meters high as it hit land. The scientists say that a similar disaster took place millions of years ago and resulted in the extinction of 90 percent of all living species.
Panic Anyone?! :heh:
-
no panic yet... this has been known for a few years already. But if the mayas and nostradamus are rite, we might not even make it past 2012 anywayz..
and who know, in nearly 30 years we should be able to come up with some kind of defense against a big rock from space.
-
we already have a defense for rocks in outer space and theres no way life on earth will no longer exist due to what the bible says
-

Nukes that merely break them in two would do the job, of course. ;)

We do? Where? The only defense I know of is the atmosphere but that doesn't work for ones that are too big.

Just so long as you pulverize it and don't just create two asteroids that would impact Earth instead of one.
And I thought we weren't supposed to live past 1995? Oh wait, that was 1998. Or was it 2000? 2003? 2006? Oh man, I can't keep up with all this dooms day stuff. Maybe my calendar is just off...
-
lol, scientists just love to spit out doomsday reports these days. Meteors, weather, aliens... you name it :P
-
There is no way we'd pick up an asteroid heading for us. The only time we can actually see one, is when its tail grows, in which case those are ice asteroids, not asteroids made of rock. We could get hit by a rock roid, and we'd never even know it until we noticed its effects. And even if we did notice it, there really isn't much chance of stopping it. Not unless we unload an assload of nukes on it, and last I checked, ICBMs weren't designed for space flight...
Nor do they have all that good of range either...
-
China is testing missiles capable of destroying a sattelite. Something like that could be used to prevent a meteor hit
-
This reminded me on something....
Arnold Schwarznegger ( the govremenor of california( is he still in the position?)) wanted to blow up Moon to stop women having PMS ...
-
/me starts colletcting 10000 common & rare units of metal
Aw, there's nothing to be afraid of
-
Haha. Don't forget the 10000 units of food. :P
-
Know what I think we should do?
StarFlare and Supernova the comets!
-
Supernova rulez
-
Just nuke'em and be done with. Maybe use a modified Tsar Bomba to do so.
-
Nukes that merely break them in two would do the job, of course. ;)
What are the odds of that? All computer projections show that if a nuclear warhead hit an asteroid it would break into five pieces that all missed the Earth! :P

Update: Oops.
If we put a rocket booster on the Moon we can use it as a shield though!

Just nuke it, damnit! We have nukes enough to devastate a entire World. If you shoot enough, you DO CAN destroy anything!

Uh, we DID nuke it.
And "DO CAN"?

Who do you think u are people?! I am the president of US! Gimme that damn phone! *beep* *beep*
R: Da?
US: We have a nuclear facility on these coordinates. We will nuke you in 15 minutes.
R: Что? Петар! Дайте мне ключи, i'l скрыть эти подонки так плохо, что они забрать их частей тела в пространстве. NOW!
US: ? *what did he say*
R: Amerikansky, you will die *click*
The President: oh god, they are so stupid, and willing to help us. Now Bob, lauch the nukes.
Bob: How much?
The President: All 25 thousand.
Bob: !, OK....
And so the Americans and Russians saved the day.
That would be a wonderfull story if Russia didn't fire 5 nukes on washington too :P
And that 5 thousand nukes didn't hit Mars that fell apart and Doomed Earth.
Have a nice Day. :P
And yes, if this doesn't work:

Everybody thinks too 2d. Universe is 3d, so putting XXL rocket boosters on upper part of Earth, just like General Sirbomber said, just i reformulated it, we can boost Earth Down and avoid collision. Only problem will be getting it back in place. :P
-
Moving the Earth wouldn't work! The gravitational pull of the Earth will pull the asteroid fragments into us!
Update: A few scientists have developed a last-ditch plan to save the Earth. If we build a giant pillow fort around the Earth then the pillows will absorb the impacts from the asteroids!
-
Who says? If the asteroid speed is big, the pull affect will be the same but if the force of moving is bigger that the gravity, the asteroids will have a open orbit, they will miss Earth. And that will surely happen, beacuse the Earth will be under the asteroids, so the Gravity force is smaller.
-
Well, whatever we do, we'd better hurry up!
One of the ConVecs that was supposed to build one of the rocket boosters decided to take a "shotcut" and we've lost contact with it, though witnesses report seeing a ConVec driving into the Atlantic Ocean...
-
why did you take the Experimantal Convecs. dammit. Did you ever heard of a helicopter? The whole sky is a shortcut. Never mind, i'm sending one.
Uh-oh, the Penguin rioters are here... Hey, they got ak-47's ! Hey, put that thing down !
*penguin shoot Savant in the foot* Auch! Eat Fish! *headshot* they are nuts!
Here is another option if this fail *it will fail*, now, we could use Conestoga to tow Earth, now the only problem is to find a 500+ km long steel cable.
Do you have one in your garage?

There are several possiblities when it come to diverting a asteroid.
1. Using nukes. By using the explosion of a low yield nuclear device near the surface of the asteroid it will alter its course slightly.
2. Using a Kenetic divice. A drill or some thing like it that takes peices of the asterroid and hurls them out into space. And the recoild from this action diverts the asteroid.
3. Attaching a solar sail. Solar sails uses the solar wind as there propulsion. Attaching this to the roid may stop it or divert it.
4. Near miss and asteroid becomes earths second moon. Only containing a s*** load of iron which then the USA will try to claim as there own only to start another space race with a mining mission to stake a claim on the roid moon. Or the Near miss will result in the asteroid hitting the sun venus or even mercury. Or it can come back around and hit us again.
5. The scientists are completely wrong because they have to rely on computers which never seem to be right in the first place and there is no danger at all or the earth is doomed and ever one that live in a coastal state/country will be f***ed. Assuming it hits water.
-
Freeza, everyone knows asteroids are made of rock. :P
P.S. Mr. President, I thought you already gave the order to launch the ship? At least I was onboard!
-
There made of many things mostly a form of Crystalized iron that can only be found in space.
-
The nukes idea is the best thing going for us right now. unless the asteroid is similar to a clump of loose rubble, unlike a solid rock. if its just rubble, than the asteroid could absorb the nukes explosion and barely slow down.
Maybe we could place another large rock in the way of the asteroid, like a comet or the moon, or send a few guys in a space shuttle to blow the damned thing in half. Just hope it doesnt hit earth after it splits *crosses fingers*

I'm assuming you used a translator? That Russian is pretty messy and wrong…
The President: oh god, they are so stupid, and willing to help us. Now Bob, lauch the nukes.
Please be aware that there are Russian members of this forum as well. Though this may be humorous, it is still rather inconsiderate.

On a different note, I doubt that anything cataclysmic will be allowed to happen. Taking into account all the novel inventions and weaponry that the government secretises from the public until long after it is created, I'm sure that there is not much of a threat, especially with warning this far in advance.
-
I'm assuming you used a translator? That Russian is pretty messy and wrong…
Yeah... But, i'l try to learn Russian. I'l think someday, Russian will come in handy.
Why does anyone on this World make a very smart translator, when you write "Ich haße coffe" that it actually translates "I hate coffe" , not some idiotic thing like "Hate coffe I"
Probably even Martians have invented a fully functional translator to understand us.... :heh:
-
Uhhh right any way.
With the non solid asteroids they would most likely fall a part and shower the earth like a shot gun to a water melon.
People always assume splitting a asteroid is going to happen. It wont that is sci fi.
The only thing a nuke will do is divert it or slow it down. The are many other options which will work that we can do right now that do not involve sending people in the space shuttle. Using the space shuttle is really out of the question as its not made for that kind of travel. You would be better off using a moon land from the apallo mission with some thing "extra" on board. Be it a solar sail or some kinetic device the moves the asteroid off couse.
