Chainguns
Related ideas:
Small Eden Units
Description:
If all your technology is blasted away, does it make sense to start rebuilding with weapons technology far greater than what you have to begin with? No, you start with something basic. So each colony would have a basic chaingun unit - Guard Posts might have double barrels, and Tigers might have 4...but its still the same principle. Bullets, shoot, kaboom. It would be weak, basic, cheap, and maybe require a Common Ore cost every once in a while to reload?
Why its a good idea:
?
Why its a bad idea:
?

The technology for the weapons already existed, read the Eden Novella, it explains it quite well.
-
Yeah, I think the microwave weapon was technology they used to transmit power..
Also, you could go into the databanks and learn about earth weapons.

I can't quite see a chainsaw guard post... that wouldn't be too effective in my honest oppinion....

Not chainsaw, chaingun... a chainsaw gp would probably do as much good as starflare gps do :P
-
I prefer the Acid Cloud, which will "rapidly" harm anything in a large radius.
-
yea, i agree it wouldn't do much, chain guns are designed to rip though soft targets like people, anything with armor they just bounce off
-
Hmm... some sort of armor-piercing chaingun, then? :P
-
bazooka gaurd posts! lol
-
True, they wouldnt do much, but they could be cheap, and you could develop them pretty much from the game start - or not develop them at all, but have them right from the beginning.
-
Actual idea real is not best idea and beside that chaingun not seeam fit whole space theme for outpost.

Don't bullets need oxygen to shoot stuff?
The Outpost series isn't exactly famous for its abundance of planets with lots of oxygen.
-
Why would they need oxygen to fire?
-
Bullets on earth need oxygen to feed the explosives used to propell the bullet. Bullets in OP3 could be fired using a different method though.
-
In Halo, they stopped using gunpowder in favor of highly compressed explosive gasses. Just an idea.
-
bullits dont need oxygen to fire, they are in a self contained case anyway, they have all the oxygen they need inside the case
Freeza and I have come up with a new weapon that may be useful, it has been nicknamed the pipe organ, you will see why in a minute
to understand this weapon you will first have to understand what metalstorm is, here is a link to the wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_storm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_storm)
as you can see, with metal storm the barrel itself houses a rather large number of projectiles which are fired electronicly allowing for a fire rate much higher than even the most high tech chain gun
the only disadvantage to this system is the diffuculity of reloading, which I beleave I have remided the problem
here it is http://www.freeza.outpostuniverse.net/ima.../Pipe-Organ.jpg (http://www.freeza.outpostuniverse.net/images/model-shots/Pipe-Organ.jpg)
freeza went a little overboard, there are only supposed to be 16 barrels and the loading system (ill explain later) should have 8 loaders instead of 4
basicly this system has the metalstorm barrels mounted on a rotating belt, the outer belt you see is for stability, half of the barrels on the belt would be above the vec while the other half as with the entire loader assembly would be inside the vec
as a barrel emerges from the vec it will start fireing, once it has made its way around it should be exausted of all its projectiles as it makes its way back into the vec
once inside, a cylinder would rotate with the breach of the barrel, a new strip of rounds would fall into the hopper just behind the barrel where it would be pushed into the barrel by a ram while the whole thing is rotateing
so for an ingame version of this turret you would only need to have 8 exposed barrels and the tower that supports them, to fire the barrels would rotate around the tower and anyware from 20 to 50 rounds would come out of each barrel
needless to say such a weapon would be devistating, ill leave it to the op3 team to try and balance it if its accepted, if it can even be balanced lol

most chainguns are actually cannons like on the a-10 warthog, they actually fire munitions that explode on contact. they are more like small rockets than bullets. i find that an interesting idea. a chain-rocket launcher :P

This Metal Storm - I think I heard about it on the news.
It looked like a pidgeonhole box, and they demonstrated its use as a firefighter - loaded it up with "water bombs" (not actually balloon style water bombs, but similar), and bombarded a building on fire with it. That was a few years back.
Good to see that not all weapons technology is only good for death and destruction. (thumbsup)

That pipe organ does sound like an awesome idea, just add in some stuff to give it a cooler-looking turret and its loaded for bear!

Ok Betarays idea is a bit extreem.
How ever a Solid projectile weapon would be nice even tho there very generic there still very fun. I purpose the Vulcan it fires in bursts because the barrels heat up. This way no one can say what about constant fire.
-
I like that gun, Freeza. Very kewl lookin :)
-
More weapons is good but we cant have too many. And also the weapon should have an advantage and be effective vs one type of unit so that you would get it to counter thos units.
-
I think it would do very little damage to Medium armor, and no or almost no damage to Heavy armored stuff.
