meh, they're overused, I don't mean I don't like them, but there's way too many games with them... I think people like them mainly it's in space (people are facinated by the unknown), and it's violent.

Spacebattles aren't overused. There can never be enough of them! I'd personally like to see more games with awesome spacebattles. They seem to have fallen a little bit behind the last years, almost everything is FPS now.

too many games, movies, and TV shows use space battles.  Quite frankly, I'm bored of them.

I never get bored of space battles :D Only the really sucky ones get me bored, like the one in the beginning of Star Wars III, OMG that space battle was badly done, coordinated and boring! Actually, all the battles in that movie were badly done, coordinated and boring. So...

In games and movies we have many different varriations of the same thing.   People trying to kill eachother en masse.   There are many different versions of this, for many different games.
We have the Past Battles:   Battles that occured at some point in history, or had similar troop types.    This starts from the dawn of Man's "intelligence", the Stone Age.   From this point, it ranges up to modern technology, and beyond.   At this point, it becomes the Space Age theatre of warfare.
Space age warfare seems to be more abundant then modern or past warefare.    I'd estimate it'd only be another 20-30 years before Age Of Empires has to start reaching into futuristic battle, assumeing the series lasts that long.
Futuristic Warfare reaches into places that no Human can traverse...   For now.   We still suffer from one very large problem - the lack of FTL Drives.
As such, they reach into places that people can only dream about, as our knowledge on planet formation is mostly limited to our own solar system.

I think they are overused... I mean they ARE cool and all, it's just I see them in nearly EVERY sci-fi movie involving space...

I like space battles, thats why I'm tempted to say they're not overused.
However, they are definitely overused when they are just in a film/game as an action element and don't add to the story.

Yeah, I think that space battle are good when they have a meaning if they do not have one then it is pointless.

80% of the time, they don't really add anything [important]

well depends what you mean by 'space battles'. Space battle as in, ships in space and such? or something that takes place 'in' space (i.e. outside of planet earth). For example OP2.

Also, some games for example Descent: Freespace take place entirely in space (there is no land based combat at all).

lol, that's not technically a space battle.  It all happens in these underground stations on other planets where the worker bots have ben corrupted.
