12 units for the start, 6 units left on the wrong side <_< oh and I was playing a test of power against the AI I thought maybe I could beat the AI with lasers against microwaves :P
-
same tech level?
-
Microwave turrets don't look like ... anything. They're just weird blobs of graphics. I think the laser turret looks better. That and their is something about the weapons fire from a microwave that just doesn't look right.
But hey, on the other hand, it's always cool to see your opponent's vehicles blowing up. So in that sense, I guess I like microwaves better. ;)
-
I say microwave, 'cause it's the one we actually have working at a similar level to in game
-
i love the mirowave glory!
and please post in my micro map thread.
-
Laser its eden and not to bad after the heat dis upgrade and a total underdog
-
I prefer the microwaves, the noise is more pleasant; moreover, the laser turrets looks like tv parabola...
-
ya the laser looks cool, allways liked it.
-
I'd have to say the microwaves are cooler. Partly because they ARE more powerful (like Hooman said, they make enemy vehs go boom, so they're more fun :P)
I think they're more original as well. What sci-fi game DOESN'T have a laser? Where on the other hand, I've never seen microwaves in a sci-fi game.
And yeah, like sigueule said, their sound is better. (The laser sounds a bit, err, "wimpy.") :heh:
That reminds me, I wrote a level a couple days ago that is a purely 'scientific' test of the laser vs microwave. Obviously you can tell that mics will win, by looking at the dmg values in the sheets, but it's fun to watch and see who will win experimentally.
Basically it sends waves of 1 laser vs 1 mic each, from two different AI bases (CC and VF each). after about 5 "rounds" of this, the microwave overpowers the lynx and destroys the other ai's CC and VF.

What are you talking about? They both go "ki-pow! ki-pow! ki-pow! ki-pow!" over and over again. The microwave just has an echo.
And the laser looks much better than the microwave, which apparently resembles a box.

See how boxy it looks?

I think thats an RPG turret
me I pick laser, because I tried building a microwave weppon in my basement, and it nearly burned my house down, so I dont like them (thumbsdown)
-
beta, look in the lower left corner of the right picture and you will see a microwave lynx. I love that pic, it was so well done
-
I like the lightning on the right hand of it
does anyone know who did those pics, and/or what program they used?
-
I can get you a list of the people who work on it but as for who made it I can't get that.
I have always thought the Laser looked the best.
-
I can reproduce that lightening effect with colored pencils.
-
Yeah, those pics are pretty kick ass. Someone needs to tell the person who made them. Not that they don't already know.
But yeah, in game, the microwaves look too boring. You don't really get much of a feel for the weapon mounted on the turret.
-
I like the laser sound better then the microwaves'. And the sci fi look to those lynx is nice.
-
the laser, it's just light; I have a laser-pencil, I use them to amuse my cat who follow the red point...
while the microwave, we feel the charged-particles with high energy who shoot the schielding of the target to create difference of potential who will heat the steel and melt them :o ; I love see a microwave-tiger who demolish some vehicles!
the laser, bof, it's just a red feature...
-

That was kind of silly. I see that games have a direct influence on you.
Anyway, I much prefer the laser (although I think dynamix reversed the turrets... honestly, lasers don't need a dish to focus their beams... they're already focused but microwaves very much need a dish to focus their beams). Anyway, point being, despite the (apparant) mixup, I much prefer the lasers. The beams look fun (glowing red stuff... mmmmm....) and the turrets are just freaking sweet.
-
As far as those images are concerend, they were part of OP2's artwork package if I'm not mistaken (mission pics from Plymouth's campaign?).
Anyway, chances are they created those images using whatever 3D software suite they used to create the cutscenes.
As far as lighting goes, it's a rather simple effect to recreate both real-time in a game and offline using either PhotoShop or a 3D software suite. I can teach anyone how to create such effects if they'd like (e.g., the OP3:GEN logo... I'll attach it to the bottom of this post).

I just realized something. That pic is from the plymouth campeigne, but plymout is getting their ass kicked in it. idiots build the generators outside of the gaurdpost lines
-
What are you talking about CK9?
Everyone knows you should dismantle all colony-vital buildings and rebuild them right outside your enemy's base. ;)
-
Well I don't know if that's such a terrible idea. I've made good use of exploding tokamaks in a game before. It took at the attacking army about a second before an acid cloud lynx was finished building, which had no trouble killing the disabled units.
Btw, has anyone found that certain movement patterns with vehicles tend to give them a better chance of survival. I remember doing certain things with a laser lynx up against a microwave lynx and I managed to win about half the time (instead of like 10% of the time).
-
Microwave has proven to work better.
-
micro def has nicer sound. the anim for the bolt isnt every sexy, altho somewhat hypnotising @.@
-
I still want to modify some things about that microwave bolt. (It's a procedural animation, meaning, rather than there being graphics in the OP2_ART for it, there's code to render it when the weapon fires. Other procedural animations in OP2 are the laser, and Thor's hammer (maybe others, I can't think of all the animations right now))
It would be interesting to see a green microwave, or maybe one that zigzags before it hits the target.
-
I find that the grey and the kaki is beautiful, too :)
-
I liked the Micro ray that was on the pre-release demo :P
-
it was different?
-
Yeah ;) you should get the demo and see for yourself
-
oké, I will download them! this is on the downloads category?
-
I believe that the demos are included in version 1.3.4 as colony games.
-
micro has a tad higher rate of fire then laser but that aside i think laser is better. besides when the people from eden hear that microwaves are coming to the front lines they just get TV dinners :P
-
I think they are great opposites of each other. I believe the almost cancel each other out as far as pro's vs con's. Lasers will do more damage, but a microwave it scramble your electronics (and cybernetics for that matter). Using a laser on technological system is just going to make burn marks in everything, but a microwave will just heat up armor and not really eat through it unless its light. Long story short, the microwave I just think as more versatile, but the laser does have some more brute force damage. As far as the game is concerned I'd rather go microwave.

Fear the Microwave Tiger.
-
Awesome!
-
The microwaves has that cool repeating fire sound
:)
-
Yea I think microwave is cooler.
Lol @ Pic
-
Microwave.
The turret even looks more durable.
