So... If you could make your own OP2 tileset, which would it be (and why if you want)?
I'd have to say Space because it would fit well with how OP2 works.
-
The first idea that came to my mind when Levi presented Greenworld was an indoor tileset in the style of some Red Alert missions. Thats what I'd make if I had the time.
-
i'd have to say snow (my vote), or beach.
WTF! Dancefloor ??
-
If you've been to my site, you'd know that I'd say underground :heh:
-
PLAID!!
-
Snow!
There must be more Ice out there than just the few tiles wide ice packs you see on the world maps!!
-
Fighting on the ice caps...too bad you can't program the vehicles spinning out, hehehe
-
Maybe we could bug Lev to work on icewld!
I'd do some tilesets but I don't have the patience to create individual land features like cliffs, etc
Actually, I did a sort of sandy one (it looks a bit like mars) but there aren't definite terrain objects like cliffs. it's just semi flat land, about 20x20 tiles.
-
I am thinking a swapland tileset that can be ripped like green world if possible.
-
I'm going to regret saying this, but if I knew how to, I'd probably do some tilesets.
So... How DO you do tilesets?
-
In it's most basic form, you just convert or create some graphics. Outpost2 will accept normal Windows bitmaps for the tilesets. You just make the bitmap 32 pixels wide, by 32*numTiles pixels high. Pack each 32x32 pixel tile right on top of each other.
Now, that will allows the game to load and use the graphics, but there is still more to having a tile set that works correctly. Unfortunately, we've never provided editing for the other misc details to handle things smoothly (yet). So I guess you can just not worry about them right now.
If you're wondering what the other misc details are, think what happens when you bulldoze a region, or lay down tubes or walls. It has to change the tile graphics from whatever it was to the bulldozed, tubed, or walled tile. There is a table that is supposed to handle this translation (and is built into the map files that use the tilesets). But alas, editing that table is something that's still only planned for the future. In the meantime, you can use the table from an existing map, and organize your tileset so certain things correspond, like the bulldozed, tubed, and walled tiles. Lava tiles are probably also important. (Just make sure the indexes are all at the same position). Anyways, editing for that will eventually become available, so even if you have no idea what I'm talking about, you don't need to worry too much.
So yeah, just made a big tall bitmap with the tiles you want in it.

Why does no one check the wiki before asking?
wiki.outpostuniverse.net/How_To_Make_Tilesets (http://www.wiki.outpostuniverse.net/How_To_Make_Tilesets)
Im sure you could of found that on your own!
Post any questions.

I'm afraid of encyclopedias, electronic or otherwise.
But fine, I'll check it out...
So, where would I get that gif editor it talks about?
-
You dont need one.. get IrfanView if you dont got it, its a great image viewer and converter.
Well tbh (to be honost) your gonna have a lot of trouble making new tilesets untill we release the little tools to help ya. Ill try and get it done by friday. Keep buging me!
But you should start by making images which your gonna have for your tileset. Hills, rocks, passable terren whateva etc. Thats the first step, make the images. converting it to work with op2 comes after. then making maps.
-
To be honest, I just took the starcraft ice world tilesets and saved them at bitmaps.
So all I really have to do with art is make bulldozed, tubed, rubbled, and walled tiles.
I think...
Until then I'll pretend I know what to do.
-
Dont worry about walls, tubes and the op2 stuff because what we do is get the blank tiles (eg wall on white) and paste em over the bulldozed tile.
So what you gotta do is make a bulldozed tile. And custom creator tiles would be good, you know, when a unit blows up it leaves a mark.
-
Right now I'm sorting through what I actually do and don't need. (I just click export on all of them). I don't think we'll be using the dirt, grass, or water tiles? ;)
I'll think about using the ice tiles or not.
What do you all think?
-
would be cool (thumbsup)
-
I wouldnt have the water because it takes a lot of effort to make it animiate.
-
Lol, it could be fun to have an auto-tileset generator like Photoshop's Cloud Generator. :D
Imagine the messed up battles and whatnot!!!
OOH!!!! a tile randomizer, just for the heck of it! Make screwed up levels that people don't know where the are going. Adds a new element to the game; Finding your way out of the maze and killing your opponents....
THink of the possibilities
Stormy :op2:
