I heard a kool story from a church i went to on vaca:
A woman that pulled up behind a man at a red light who was talking on a cell phone. The woman didn't think n e thing of the man, just that she was in a hurry. Well, when the light turned green, the man didn't budge but just kept talking. He did this for the next few rounds and soon the woman became furious. She got out of her car and started screaming. She went up to his window yelling a making obscence gestures. The man became freaked out and drove away. The woman stormed off to her car swearing out loud. Little did she no, there was a cop behind her who saw the whole thing. He walked over to her and arrested her. The woman became even more upset and was very confused.
After about 3 hours at the station the officer released the woman telling her that he had made a mistake. When the woman asked the officer what the mistake was, he replied, "I saw the metal Jesus fish, Jesus Freak liscence plate, and 'I Profess Christ as My Lord' bumper sticker on the back of your car." Naturally when I saw u making those obscene gestures and freaking out on that man I figured your car was stolen.
-
lmao, that's funny.
-
Huh?? Why would he arrest her?
-
because of a steriotype of christians that plym has proven to me several times false without knowing it
-
what steriotype would that be? if a Chrtistian is actually following Christ's teachings then they should be trying to live a Christ like life.
-
:s i'm confused now, Some christians can be like that, but very very few are, the ones that are have rejected christ and just say they are christian, unless they repent that is.
-
It also depends on how you believe. A lot of people believe in Christ and follow his ways, but not out loud. They don't show it to the outside world, they just believe and talk to him in private. Then some people wear it out on their sleeves and make sure that everyone knows they believe.
-
some people almost apear to be ashamed of what they beilive. The first group are unfortinatly most likley living a lie, they say they beilive in Christ but then dont follow what he taught. Others actually try to live what Christ taught, there is a third group (every good thing has fanatics)
-
i like posting stories like this. You see, i'm a born again Christian living in a household of people that agree they don't "practice what they preach." I just want people to know that if they profess their life to God, it should be all or nothing.
-
I agree it should be all or nothing, and doesn't this kind of sound like a debate?
-
No, this sounds like people talking about christ and christianity.
-
:s i'm confused now, Some christians can be like that, but very very few are, the ones that are have rejected christ and just say they are christian, unless they repent that is.
If those people have rejected Christ, they are not Christians, no matter what they call themselves.
Webster's dictionary defines the verb "reject" as:
1a. to refuse to accept, consider, submit to, take for some purpose, or use, 1b. to refuse to hear, receive, or admit.
In other words, forcefully refuse.
You can't call yourself a "Christian" but forcefully refuse to accept Christ.
The general 'steps' or 'process' to becoming a true Christian are:
1. Acknowledge that you are a sinner - to know that you can't do it by yourself and need help from God to 'come clean.'
2. Believe that Jesus is the Christ - believe that Jesus died on a cross to save you from your sin, something that you can't do by yourself.
3. Repent (turn away) from sin - live a Godly life, not a sinful one.
4. Be baptized (this is something that's not very well agreed on by different denominations of Christians... some think without it you are not 'saved', some think opposite, etc. This is a debate for another time. I personally believe that if someone turns to God and wants to be saved, for example they have some terminal illness, etc without being baptized that they WILL be saved, but however baptism is considered an act of obedience and is something that should be done by a true Christian).
God has also commanded Christians to assist in doing good things for his Kingdom, that is bring others to Him, etc.
One point that I want to make clear is that just going to church every week does NOT make you a Christian automatically. (I believe that standard practices that some denominations do, like baptism as a baby, confirmation, etc don't make you a Christian) You can't automatically be a Christian, you have to be willing to live it.
Anyway, back to your question Plymoth:
The amount of Christians like that are greater than you think... In God's eyes all sin is equal, and the punishment for sin is death (going to hell when you physically die). So the majority of Christians have problems with this.
(The bible mentions things that are done mentally can be sin, eg hate, lust, etc)
Hopefully that answers a lot of questions. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!
-
Well, you don't go to Hell when you die if you sin, or else Heaven would be empty. You ask for forgiveness and you are forgiven for you sins. There has only been one person who lived a sinless life, and that would be Jesus Christ. I believe that only God and no man can forgive me for my sins, unlike what the Catholics believe. I worship Jesus Christ, not Mary and I focus more on Jesus after he died on the cross and came back, not focusing on the fact of him being on the cross, which Catholics are more attuned to.
Many people worship God in different ways, some through another human and some talk straight to God. I believe that no Human can forgive sins, but I do believe that as long as you believe and have faith, that you will be accepted into Heaven. Try not to sin and when you do ask for forgiveness, go to church - but not just because you have to, but because you want to worship God in his house.

I just relived a sunday school lesson when I read that. You don't HAVE to be baptised to be a christian, as it is basicly just a symbol. I myself was baptised only a few years ago, and even though I don't go to church every sunday like I should, i am still a christian cause I help my church and other people in any way i am capable. I do my best to do what God wants me to do, and even though I try not to sin, no one can not sin except God.
-
Way to go guys! I'm not baptised (mom wouldn't let me and i have a feeling that my foster parents wouldn't let me either, traditionalists catholics). :( Well, i'm glad people can read and talk about this stuff. I can't go to church or participate in Christian things b/c of my Catholic foster parents who think it's a waste of my life being this religious, but hey, I love my Christ, but I still love it when people get up the guts to tell people how it is. If u live ur life for God and he doesn't exist, then u can't lose. But don't live ur life or God and he does, then you might end up in Hell.
-
Well put. And Jesus didn't sin either - the only human ever. I really like that people can talk about their religion. Some are shy from doing it in real person, but this is another way to spread the word if you aren't good at it in reality.
-
Very true. but really how many people do you know that are on xfir.net? The whole world needs him, but every person counts
-
If you even change one person's mind and lead him to Christ, than it was worth all the effort.
-
In Revelation (also my christian rock band name:) it says Christ wont come again untill every single person has heard the good news, so i don't know about you but I would really like to see christ come again (thumbsup). so get off these forums and go tell people! j/k.
-
 garrettsbro, ur goofey. lol. I agree. There are millions of people who haven't even heard the name Christ Jesus. I can't talk bout religion at home b/c it affends my foster parents. I love the fact that i can come on here and talk about it. (thumbsup)
-
Well Garrettsgirl, I personally will be glad to talk about him with you. I like talking about him.
-
I don't think i know a christian that doesn't like to talk about him :)
-
Like I said before, there are the shy one's that keep their faith to themselves.
-
And there is no reason to be shy about God.
garrettsgirl, have you tried to share God with your foster parents? maybe not verbally but I'm sure there is a way to 'soften' them and be more receptive.
And if your other parents don't want you to get baptized? Be baptized anyway.. the Bible says to not let anything get in the way of being obedient to Him. (They don't have to know about it either)
well, appears that I should get off the computer before my eyes burn anymore (lucky me to forget my glasses when I know I can't look at a computer screen for more than 10 min without them).
-
yeas i have tried to share my faith w/ my family. They told me that they don't wanna hear about that stuff (matt. 13:35 says something like the members of your own household won't believe you when it comes to CHrist b/c they'd have to change and they won't want to.) I get in trouble for talkign bout God all the time so i don't mention him around them which is a major bummer. Also, it was my mom's wishes for me to not get baptised. She couldn't stand the fact that i loved something other than her (rest her soul). Towards the end of her death she refused to let me go to church b/c she wanted me all to herself. Besides, my church told me that even though they wanna baptise me and i wanna be baptised, mom said no and they believe in listening to parents wishes. Mark and Karen (my foster parents) hate the fact that i'm not Catholic and i think it might even be that they can c i have a stronger relationship w/ God than them.
-
I don't think it was Mat 13:35.
Mat 13:35 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.
I don't know which verse you were reffering to was or else I would have posted it as well. And if that was the verse you were referring to I didn't interprit that as what you meant.
-
As one of my pastors told me it is often easier or more effective if you set up someone else to share their faith with people that you are close to.

Well it is one of the Ten Commandments to listen to your parents. If it was her dying wish that you not be baptised (sp?), the you shouldn't. Being baptised isn't required, though it is a good thing to do. If you believe in Christ as your savior and believe in God as he is the only God and that he loves you, then you will go to Heaven (as long as you don't kill someone or something).
-
Even if oyu do kill someone, you can still repent. A lot of murderures have turned from their ways and become christians just before they were executed.
-
But did they really accept Christ and really ask for forgiveness, or were they just saying that to keep from going to Hell right before they die. If they didn't really accept Christ into their hearts and were just saying that, than I doubt that counts.
-
Excuse me if this is incredibly inacurate, but I remember reading something like it in the Good News Bible. I also don't have one handy, not a Christian, but I go to a catholic school. I think it was a parable but I don't remember, its been a year since I had religion and got to look at a Good News bible.
The hypocrites pray in public, and let everyone know. They will get their reward in heaven. However, those who pray in private, and conceal their faith will also get their reward in heaven. The hypocrites give money to the poor, they do it publicly and make a big show of it. They will surely get their reward in heaven. However, those that do help the poor in private and do not tell anyone will get their reward in heaven.
It goes something like that. I have a semi formulated idea on what it means, but I'm not sure.
I'm not sure this is in there, but I remember it strongly... Again, not sure how it goes.
The least you do onto others is what you do unto me
Plus, who cares if it turns into a religious debate, so long as it dosn't turn into a flame war. People keep it calm and respect eachother and don't heat it up and there shouldn't be a problem. I'm pretty sure most people here are respectful of others beliefs, just the same old case of the few ruining life for the many.
-
I respect all beliefs (Muslim, Catholic, etc.), but I was just saying that in the Catholic religion, it has almost come to the point where the priest make themselves level with God. You have to talk to them besides God, they punish you, though God is a forgiving God, they worship Mary, though she was but a human (a blessed human, but a human none-the-less).
-

dude Garrettsbro you rock. haha. and garrettsgirl, i hope that your 'foster parents' will lighten up some and you will be able to go to church more often.
-
Honoring your parents is a commandment, however, they also have responsibilities that are outlined in the bible. If they are preventing you from becoming closer to God your heavenly father than you are sort of exempt from following them. Kind of like when Daniel was arrested for praying because it was against the law but it was required by Gods law. Gods law must come first.
-
Good point, but since baptism isn't required, than does that count? It is a sign of you going to God, but nowhere does it say that it has to be done.....does it (maybe I just missed it).
-

Sorta right, but I think its the concept of wanting to be obedient to God. Because they are keeping you from serving God like you want to, then don't listen to them.
True, baptism isn't required but if someone wants to be as obedient to God as they can then baptism is important.
(note to all: let's not get into a fight over who's right, catholics or not... if this starts a flame war we'll probably have to close the topic... so let's please not go there..)
-
Zeus, your right about some just "saying" that they have turned around. Then there are the ones that really have turned around. The ones that just "say" don't go to heaven, they burn in the pits of hell. The ones that really have go to heaven to be with the lord.
-
it has almost come to the point where the priest make themselves level with God.
I don't know who told you this, but it isn't true. I'm catholic and hispanic, but never have I seen a priest that acts in this manner. Priests only help spread the word and give guidence to those that need it. It's called holy orders (we being at the bottom) not pretend to be god. Priests are human and anybody can be one if they want to (aka saint, priest, Bishop, etc.). This is why there are seperate sacraments that split when you get married or become a priest. The level of study is represented by the name you are honored with. You don't even have to be catholic to become a saint so this honor doesn't only appy to catholics it can go to anybody.
Catholics don't even have to go to church. You only go if you want to practice you're religion as a large community. God is everywhere not only in a church, temple, land, etc.. Everybody who practices to be a christian is a priest in some way. The apostles where all normal dudes just that they decided to spread and study the words of jesus more then most normal people would have.
-
how true Prime, however, recently there have been a number of preists that have not been acting apropriatly and made the news. now this doesnt only happen in the Catholic church they just happened to make the news.
-
Yeah, but those are people who have fallen away from their faith and their God. If oyu truley love God, you won't do stuff like that..... (btw, now there are 3 people that have my name in their username. lol)
-

Sorry, I shouldn't have worded my posting like I did. I didn't mean to offend anyone. I guess that since I hear about it from my wife (was a hispanic Catholic who converted) and her family...and from my dad telling me about the Mexican Catholic Priest's, I just posted without thinking. I realize that there are corrupted church leaders in every faith...but like Ben said, it is the Catholics that make the news, so I guess that it is easy to talk about them. I will saying stuff about Catholics as I don't want to offend anyone and they are men of God (well, at least the good one's that still follow God).
-
well, i'm a born again Christian and i'm forced to go to a Catholic church (i dislike it a lot b/c of the priest who doesn't get into his homilies and preaches mountain wing stories.) I can't stand that church b/c i must go to it instead of the one i love. The reason i love the one I do is the way i feel when worship time comes around and i feel close to God. I also love it b/c it's smaller and i know every one and i love them and gar and sammyk and garrettsbro and mustang0906 go there and i play flute for every one and i feel happy and close to God. I dislike the Catholic religion (no offense to any one, i was myself for 14 years of my life FYI) b/c of the way they think (more about the denomination than Christ). The priest talk about purgatory which is no where in the bible (that me or n e other person i no have read). And priests don't marry. HOW CAN YOU DENY THE RIGHT GOD GAVE YOU TO LOVE ANOTHER PERSON ENOUGH TO GET MARRIED AND HAVE A FAMILY! Sorry to offend any one catholic. I don't mean too i just wanna speak what i feel. It may not be that way for you guys out there, but in this town w/ bout 10 catholic churchs it is. I no priests that smoke and have tatoos and peircings. I've been to many churchs and the Catholic religion doesn't work for me. On the up side, i no many happy Catholics who agree w/ the way that denomination works, but not me. What do y'all think? Oh, sammyk, i'm playing offeratory august 15. I wish i could go more often too...
-
I already said what I felt about Catholic Priests, but I will not repeat it as to not offend anyone. I agree with you Garrettsgirl (what can we call you besides Garrettsgirl...maybe another nickname?) but if you were in their shoes looking at the Christian religion, they would probably have some mean things to say about us as well.
-
I would agree with both of you, but please, let's keep the flaming to a minimum.
Thanks!
-
i don't mean to flame. u may call me boo-boo (lol) or how bout dee. that's one of my summer camp names. hey guys, guess what, august 5 is my moms 41 b-day. i do agree w/ u on that one zeus that we see them as odd for what they do but on the other hand we probalby look like weirdos too. lol. and what's this thing that sammyk is telling me about bumps?
-
Well today would be her birthday. Are you talking about your foster mom or your real mom? And Hacker, I am trying to keep from flaming people :)
-
Oh, sammyk, i'm playing offeratory august 15. I wish i could go more often too...
if your not able to go to church to play. i will get a swat team (composed of me, gpgarrettboast, mustang, and garrettsbro) to go to wherever you are and steal you so you can play. happy...!
-
and what's this thing that sammyk is telling me about bumps?
its on a diff. board..
-
(um. please don't double post.)
Her real mom's birthday.
(sss.)
-
gpgarrettboast, ur cute. lol. well sam, if u feel compelled to do that go right ahead; but since the fosters said yes already i think i can go the normal way. lol. thanks for posting that info gar. :P
-
grrr. i really wanted to and mustang said he wanted to be the driver. darn. sry about double posting.
by the way. booboo you did a great job for offeratory. hehe
-
Well put. And Jesus didn't sin either - the only human ever. I really like that people can talk about their religion. Some are shy from doing it in real person, but this is another way to spread the word if you aren't good at it in reality.
um...what about Abraham?
and i dunno for sure but what about Abel?
(not to mention all the babies that die before they are a week old)
yep, you knew the jewish guy wuold have to post some input into this sooner or later ^^
now, i'm hardly in the know, but isn't the metal fish thingy only on cars of mega orthodox christians of on of the christian churchs? ...think of people like ned flanders from the simpsons for example (though i dunno if he's in the right church for the fish)
anywho... as for what garret's girl said about this:
Way to go guys! I'm not baptised (mom wouldn't let me and i have a feeling that my foster parents wouldn't let me either, traditionalists catholics). well, if you don't believe in god, well... isn't that ok (wait i'm not done yet). simply cos god gave everyone freewill. however, well... a christian told me that if i didn't believe in christ as the saviour, despite how i live i'll go to hell.
well... what about people who live a good life? ... oh sugar-coated-sausages... i've lost my train of thought ...
um... well i think i was gonna say something along the lines of; if you live a good life you will go to heaven... won't you?
-

um... catholics ARE christians... they believe in christ as the saviour
you got your anglicans, your 7thday adventists, your protestants, your catholics, your p-p-p...the one starting with a p... and isn't protestant, and a few others who's names i can't remember (like the ones who knock on ppl's doors... johosephich witnesses or something)
.... but they are all christians in that they all believe that christ is the son of god. and the lord etcetera etcetera
(i dunno the full extent of what christians believe about christ)
-
But the reason some of them are not considered christians is because they do not believe in the trinity. The trinity says that God, Jesus, and the Holy Ghost are all the same thing. Some of them, say Mormons, may believe in Jesus, but they don't believe in the Trinity, there for they don't believe in the same Jesus that christians do.
I am sorry if anyone here is mormon, i did not mean to offend you, i was just trying to make a point.

There are huge difference's between Catholics and Christians.
Catholics worship Mary as though she were on the same level as Jesus. Christians believe that Mary was blessed but that's it.
Catholics focus their attention about Jesus to when he was on the cross, Christian's focus on him arising and walking among us again.
Catholics confess to a human who goes to God for them, Christian's don't believe in the middle man and go straight to God.
Those are the big one's, but there are many other differences.
-
Believe it or not, some catholics have never even read a bible themselves, they have their priest read it to them, thinking their priest is their only link to god, and he is the middle man.
-
I don't want to have to go to a human to talk to God for me. I will talk straight to God myself. But at least they believe in God, and they believe in the same God I do....so at least there's a little bit I can agree with them on.
-
There is a little bit of every religion that believe in God that we can agree on.
-
Those are the big one's, but there are many other differences.
Maany more. dont catholics believe that during lent or whatever that if you eat meat on a friday you go to hell. what the heck is that. sry to all you catholics but show me where it says that in the bible and ill belive it.
um... well i think i was gonna say something along the lines of; if you live a good life you will go to heaven... won't you?
nope. sry. you have to confess that you believe in God and ask him into your life and become reborn. my youth leader always says that the nicest people are in hell. which is true because they think that if they live a good life dont steal, dont do drugs, blah blah blah that they will go to heaven. but they were wrong
----------------------------------------------------------
and again sry if i offended any1
-
Everyone sins, but if you have to ask for forgiveness and walk with Jesus...believe he is the Savior.
Have any of you heard of Awana? I just joined it as a director (meaning I head the leaders at our church for my age group ((3-6th grade) I am really looking forward to getting started. They are in something like 115 countries and are found in most cities throughout America.
-
i used to go to it!! thats awesome. i forgot what the letters stand for though.
-
way to go plym and zeus for whipping it out. (u too sammyk). i was catholic for 14 years of my life before i became christian. catholics don't put themselves into that catrgory. they say "may god bless the catholics and the 'good' denomination." i'm sry, but God has only 1 church and his church is the "Church of God." of those who are saved in any denomination are a part of this denomination. it talks about this church of God 12 times in the new testament. and
johosephich witnesses
is jehova's witnesses. and btw, the whole church of god applies to any religion too. so as long as God resides in your heart, and you are saved, you're good:)
-
we learned that in church yesterday. dont take all the credit for thinking that up. joking. haha
-
yes but jehova's witnesses have some very distorted views and enjoy taking single versed out of context so they can show things their way, using a Bible.

ABOUT AWANA:
The acronym Awana comes from the first letters of Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed (2 Timothy 2:15).
Awana began in 1950 as a youth program at the North Side Gospel Center in Chicago, Illinois. Lance Latham, the church pastor, worked with Art Rorheim to develop a program that would appeal to young people, reach them with the gospel of Christ and train them in the Lord’s work. Other churches heard about the success of the Awana program and asked if they could use it. By 1960, Awana had registered 900 clubs.
Today, there are more than 10,000 churches in the United States that have Awana clubs. There are clubs in all 50 states. Awana can also be found in over 3,000 churches in 110 other countries.
