Which Residence Holds More Colonists?

Does the Plymouth reinforced residence or the Eden Advanced residence hold more colonists? I feel like the advanced residence does, but I could be wrong? Been so long since I played!

Here is what the Building.txt file says (and I also checked multitek.txt):
Residence (Unupgraded): 25 people
Residence (Upgraded): 35 people
Reinforced Residence (Plymouth): 40 people
Advance Residence (Eden): 50 people

Other things to note, Rein Res uses 10 more power then the other 2, and the HP rating are:
Res: 900
Adv Res: 1250
Rein Res: 1500

With disasters, plym slightly has the upper hand.  Without them, eden does hands down.

Reinforced as they might be, they're not impervious in disasters. A few more hitpoints in a disaster doesn't really make a difference in my opinion.

Good to know! Thanks! I have a modified Plymouth Starship II colony game in which I've been capturing Eden's convecs. Since I have a choice between buildings I guess I'll go with the advanced residence!

I've had a reinforced residence survive a vortex before...only to be destroyed as the advance lab collapsed, lol

No, the 250 HP is pretty much worthless. Of course, if you are playing as Plymouth, unless you are having a super tight power problem and can't build another tokomak for some darn reason, the Rein Res is better compared to the normal Res. But comparing side by side Advance Residence to Reinforced Residence, Adv Res is better at serving its purpose, being, housing people. If you are concerned with disasters effecting your building, consider having a function DIRT. I am curious at how much a Rein Res can last with a fully functional DIRT protecting it. Test anyone?

I know that if you have enough DIRTs functioning you can actually detonate a starflare guard post and have it survive. Of course it's in the red and disabled, but not destroyed.

With enough DIRTs the normal residence should handle a direct nova better than a reinforced or advanced... Provided it was not insta-poped.

Honestly, who uses a flare or nova on a residence if your inside the enemy base?

With DIRT's, a Residence can handle a 16kt nuclear explosion directly... something seems like maybe they shouldn't be making them out of melted UFO's...

Allow me to explain it with an example from my education (I FINALLY get to use something from my Chem Eng Degree :o)

Let's say you have a closed batch reactor running a highly exothermic reaction (it generates a ton of heat).  Now, if the reaction goes out of control, the heat generated will cause an increase in pressure.  If this pressure reaches and starts to exceed the design limits of the reactor, it will start to breach.  If a DIR Team is in place, they can quickly take measures that will limit the damage to the surrounding equipment/buildings.  Without a team that is specificly trained in how to deal with disasters, it is very likely that the damage won't be contained and therefor cause other damage.

A real case of this that I remember happened at a warehouse where they sterilized medical equipment before shipping it out.  One of the containing units that sterilizes had a system failure, and the gas caught on fire.  It resulted in an explosion that ripped the very heavy door off and punched it through the opposite wall of the building.  Scarry stuff.

Also there is another thing to think about, Advanced Residences and Reinforced Residences also take up more map space, so for every two you build, you could build three normal residences.
So think of it this way.
3 Upgraded Residences holds 105 People.
2x6 for a total of 12 squares taken.
Eden:
2 Advanced Residences
Holds 100 people.
2x6 for a total of 12 squares
Plymouth:
2 Reinforced Residences
Holds 80 people
2x6 for a total of 12 squares

See the math here? You may suffer from a small cost of resources and power, but for Plymouth Reinforced Residences are really not friendly to space or the resources you could loose.

Though, I'm not sure there is a scenario where you need to think in those terms.


Most would rather consider the extra worker saved - which can be used elsewhere ;)

EDIT: You also save 1 buildings towards the unit limit.

The unit limit it true, but I do usually run out of space in my main areas before I ever become close to the unit limits. It fits my playing style more I guess, as I tend to play more microeconomics, wit macro combat. Preferring peace over war.

The worker(s?) saved is what makes the Advanced especially, less so the Reinforced, so important. While your population is <50, you could REALLY use that extra scientist.

SB - I guess that depends a lot on how you build your bases. Leaving a lot of space between buildings sort of dictates that you need more space.

I usually try to keep mine as small as possible so that it is easier to defend and manage - but it will be more prone to multiple damage sites from disasters.

But if im at <50 workers, im not going to be investing into advanced residences yet.
Im going to be investing into getting to Rare Ore.

I suppose that is dependant on what you are trying to accomplish SB.
And on the game type.

Since we are now in the single player part of the forum, I assume single player is the topic here.
In many cases, doing the improving research on existing knowledge often pays off, as you will save quite a few workers from upgrading your structures compared to build and extra while researching with less scientists.
