Slow Forum
« on: June 04, 2008, 05:09:24 AM »
This forum has been somewhat slow for a while now. Some of the people that used to post here have moved on, and others are busy right now, but there are also a lot of people still around that used to post actively that just don't seem to bother anymore. I've been pondering why that is. From chatting on IRC it seems people are still interested in some of the projects here, but also don't feel they have the skills to really contribute anything. So I'm left to ask, is this just why people don't post much in this forum anymore?

What do other people think? Post your thoughts.

Are you mostly just interested in reading about stuff? Would you participate more if there was something that seemed more to your level? Would you like to see more explainations or tutorials on the more complex projects so you can raise your level?

Also, what sorts of areas do you think should be important, and with what sort of priority? More everything might be good, but in the absence of the man power for more everything, what's the most important thing. Or, if you were going to do something yourself if only someone would explain how, what would it be?
 - small patches for OP2 (and what kinds of patches?)
 - levels (single? multi? campaign? colony?)
 - editors (map editors, tile set editors, tech tree editors, music editors, ...)
 - AI
 - multiplayer game match making
 - writing new games  (mini games? remake? sequel? unrelated games?)
Be sure to specify if this is something you want to learn to do yourself (i.e. we should write a tutorial on it), or if it's something you'd like to see other people do more of.

Well, with Mcshay being out for quite a while that meant no new RMG progress to report, no new maps, nor even many updates to said maps. Maybe things will pick up now that he's back.

Personally I'd like to see an OP2 1.3.5, with the changes we talked about a while back in IRC, including the net patch and better support for localization. Also I'd like more general hacks that I can stick in missions like one that makes the blight not show up for a player until said player completes a research topic. And no, hacking's probably too complex to learn in a resonable amount of time to the point where you can do stuff like this. :P

I'd like to help with and learn some advanced mission programming and how to make a functional (if not blatantly cheating) AI. Being able to help with OP2 patches would be great, too (and probably helpful to you Hooman).

Well... I'd like to see a smarter, less cheating AI... I'd get back to work on that, but I'm not sure I'll stick to it... it needs some functions I don't even understand and, well... that just makes debugging a lot harder.

If we gather enough templates, then it'll just be a lot easier to put all of them toghether in a single tool for making map codes (or other things).

I'd be glad to help people learn how to make typical missions and scripted AIs. I have a few personal projects that I want to work on along with the RMG, so don't expect the flood of progress that last year contained (I was hurrying to finish it before school back then... didn't exactly work out).

Yes I would like to see OP2 1.3.5. Please post the changes you have talked about Arklon. Maybe we should start a new topic? Or did we allready?

I think some newbie guides on how to use the SDK and make a new multi map would be good. I think AI is too much for a newbie coder as it takes a lot of work. Multiplayer maps dont take that much work.
