Outpost 2... Papercraft!
« on: October 11, 2007, 09:11:31 AM »
I was browsing some websites while I was bored and stumbled upon something called Papercraft. Some of you may not be familiar with it, but it's basically origami (except that you can use glue) in which you can make complex 3D structures out of paper. I wanted to make one and decided that my first will be an Outpost 2 unit (more specifically, the Laser Lynx).
After about 5-6 hours of construction (much of that was trial and error, along with many many mistakes.. could probably make it alot faster now), this was my final result:

I think it turned out fairly well for my first ever project, and hope to make an entire colony soon :P

If you are interested in also making one (and making it better than I did haha) all you need is a pair of scissors/hobby knife, glue/tape, and several sheets of paper.

Just download this PDF and print it out (This one is 3 sheets)

Cut out the pieces and put it together ^^ It takes a little bit to know what pieces go where, so I may also post a reference in a little bit.  As you may notice, there are many many little pieces. these are for the tubes and such. I chose not to include them in my model as it would be incredibly tedious. You can do the same for your's if you want.

Enjoy!
--Garrett

P.S. If you have any requests for the printouts (i.e. specific structures or units), let me know and I'll try to make them for you.

Hmm... doesn't seem perfect(although, maybe I don't know how the lynx looks exactly :P), but I'll be damned by how good it looks  ;)

Starflares and supernovas might be hard, and the Tigers for them might be even harder, since they have a lot of edges...

Can you show us an example of a building?

Keep up the good work. Maybe one day you'll be able to make Outpost 2 toys and win a fortune from people who need 64 laser lynxes for a defending army before they get acids  :heh:

Hehe, it's nowhere near perfect along the lines of construction. It took me a while to get down a solid method of putting it together effectively and quickly (it was my first one hehe). As for the actual model used, it's actually pretty close to what you see in the movies in op2 from what I know. (minus the parts that were too hard to assemble lol)

Anybody ever notice how laser lynx seems to be the most loved unit in this game? (Most commonly used for different stuff)

Nice Model BTW looks outstanding for a first try

Here is the blueprint for a Eden University It's untextured/grayscale, about 5" tall, and rather easy to construct. I'm not done putting mine together, but I'll post a picture when I am!
Just download this PDF and print it out (This one is 4 sheets)

Wow, that seems like a lot of parts! And what do you do when the little unshaded flaps overlap things? Do you just fashion the rest of the flap and glue it on to the stub?

If you mean the white tabs, they're what's used to connect to the rest of the model. (they're glued to the underneath of the corresponding piece) It would help if I could get the diagram uploaded with part references ^^ but it'll take some work haha.

I know that's what they're for! That wasn't my point at all!

Just look at some of the blueprints. Clearly the white tab on the part you're supposed to cut out overlaps another white tab and then comes out on the other side. They overlap. See? So what are you supposed to do when you cut it out and you're missing part of one white tab bycause you've cut it out when making the other white tab?

oh! haha, sorry (knowing you, I knew you wouldn't be asking something so silly, but I just answered it that way anyway >.<) Well, the best thing you can do is try to avoid cutting through the overlap.. (basically, if you're cutting through the tab, slice off the end that seems less important (usually when they're perpendicular, it happens... and it's hard to avoid) One of the problems with the blueprints heh. It shouldn't hinder construction too badly though...

(hopefully i answered the correct question this time -.- )
