Post here if you would like to get on IRC @ school but cant because they block the ports.

I am thinking of working on some relay software to allow it. It wont be perfect but you will be on irc and able to chat.

i would take a survey to see what kind of filter ppls have 1st before commiting to do that. port blocking and proxy tunneling are to very different things entirely( and the latter is usually a hell of a lot harder).

here, we have a proxy, but ive set up a thing for myself that allows me to get thru it and send my mirc at home commands(via http).

Yeah, repeating what I said in my earlier post, some organizations use stateful packet inspection, so anything that looks like HTTP will get thru but no other protocols will.

The only way around this is to tunnel everything through HTTP.

actually, i cludge it. i use a webserver running a php script that calls a simple app that sends commands to mirc via dde. i use a script that outputs the last 30 lines from every chan in a file and i use that for output. also supports highlighting.

a java or vb front end could be written fairly easily.

Hehe, very true. Well, no one says we have to answer such mails (should we receive any). Our method of operations will not be dictated by an irate network adminstrator.

However, I might as well inform everyone right now that we can't host such a program (and likely will never be able to). This isn't our own made up rules, it's not Punboy's rules, but it's the datacenter's rules.

(I'm sure that a CGI:IRC would count as "proxy and redirection software" as mentioned in the TOS).

The main issue is really restrictive university internet connections. Of course, you most likely live in their student housing so you will probably use the internet for non school related work.

Many universities, companies, and ISPs block IRC usage because they think it attracts spammers and hackers. (Which is really very untrue. IRC is nothing more than a chat medium)

Anyway, it will have to be up to the people who need it to get it. We can't offer it as a service through the main server or anything.

Ok ive made a test exe (program) in VB6 to test to see if you can run it. You need the VB6 runtime files instaled to run this. Also a VB6 relay program will also need the winsock runtime file installed to run it.

anyway how do i see what ports are blocked at my school?
i know 21 and 80 is open...

the only way to find open ports is by a brute-force probe. that is unless ya can find some kind of config for the s/w

i dont think people need to be on irc at school

#1 they get in trouble
#2 they might not do there work just to be on irc
#3 as a resault of #2 they get there computer taken away from them
