"Bumping a thread" is moving it to the front of a list, such as what happens when you append a post to it, such as a simple post containing only the text "bump". Often used to gain greater attention to the thread for high traffic forums, where threads fall off the first page within minutes, and so their viewership drops quickly, even though the thread might still be current and relevant.

It would do more if there was actually some other activity in this forum.

I noticed there was a lot of thread bumping on the Runescape forums where people were buying and selling items.
