okay, I know that there is something out there that allows DOS programs to run on WinXP, but I don't know what it is.  HELP!

the command prompt doesn't like to work.  Someone was telling me on IRC the other day of a program that allows Quake to run on Win XP (forgot who it was)

there is no special 'program' to allow dos programs to run on winxp. that is .ntegrated into the os. (32bit ver only) the closest thing to the cmd prompt of dos is accessable by going to start->run and typing 'cmd' [enter]. that is not needed most of the time; you should be able to double-click on the program and have it run. if it doesnt work; you can try going to rightclick->properties and messing around with the settings under the compatibilty tab. yes, command.com will run on winxp; but that is not the issue here.

if the compatibilty tab fails u can always make a dos boot floopy...

I've had problems (at my JOB!) with running DOS applications under XP: they worked fine under 98SE, but XP screws up BADDDD.

What i did is make a DOS6 boot-disk, but i think what you referring to is MicroSoft Virtual Machine.
I have never checked it out, but some people have mentioned this to me that it would also solve the DOS-XP problem. It can apparently be downloaded from the MS website.

are you thinking of virtual pc 2004? that would work, but its not free, it only has a 45day trial. quake i dont think will work under winxp as it wants fullscreen and winxp wont let it have it.

What the problem was, was that my older games (that ran on 98se just fine) wouldn't install.  What I learned was that an application that is neccessary to command.com working, was not in to correct folder (stupid Dell people, installing WinXP sp2, which deletes autoexec from the system32 folder)

Hmm, I can think of VDMSound.

It's a wrapper that allows DOS apps to play sounds under 2k/XP (but I think it fixes a lot of other problems as well)

If you really need to run a DOS program, get together a boot disk with DOS and any sound/video/input drivers you might need. (I made up a boot disk for that purpose, it had my sound driver, as well as a mouse driver)

Then just run your dos games in real mode, not from windows.

Yeah VMware (commercial) or Bochs (free) should be able to run DOS apps.

However, the speed might not be the greatest. I'm also not sure if Bochs supports VESA (I think VMware does though).

plym, if you have windows XP with service pack 2, go to C:\WINDOWS\repair and look for the file autoexec.nt and copy it.  Then go to the system32 folder and paste it in there.

xp does not run on DOS so that wont work.  i'd use vmware.  there are cracked copies or pirated code around the internet if you do not wish to pay.

i played warcraft I master of orion 2 star control 2 on dos when i was like 7 years old  :lol: the good old time

I have gotten a few older games to run on XP, like Earthsiege 2, but nothing as far back as dos based, like WC3. What I would have to do to play anything like that is change my linux partition to fat32 and install windows ME or older. I know dos games work on that type of platform.
